1- How much time do you really need to shoot?

After the balls stop rolling 10-15 seconds at most?

2- If your going to put a time clock on them How many (time outs/Or extentions) should they get? 1 per game?

3- Should they get a break anytime they want it? Bathroom, Cigarette, or What ever.

4- If they are granted a break how long should it be 5-10-15 minutes?

5- If they are late to a match shouldn't that be their (BREAK)?

6- If they are later than 15 Minutes late should they forfeit the whole match? Or should there be some sort of time limits? something like after 15 min 1 game loss every 5 or 10 minutes after that 1 game loss for every 5 or 10 minutes?

And yes this is during tournaments :-)

1. 30 seconds, tops.

2. I like 2 timeouts per game, adding 30 more seconds per timeout.

3. Yes. 1 break per match.

4. 10 minutes maximum (timed from table back to table).

5. No.

6. After 15 minutes they should forfeit the whole match (in the event of an unusual occurence that prevents a competitor from making their match on time that is beyond their control, the tournament director MUST be called before the official match time and grace period expires and the story MUST be proven/verified for any leeway to be given. This is conditional to the TD's judgement. No exceptions.)

Just my $.02 worth.

1A-I Think 30 Seconds is to long When they have a time out or extension !

2- If your going to put a time clock on them How many (time outs/Or extentions) should they get? 1 per game?
2A- I think two 30 Second extensions is plenty.

3- Should they get a break anytime they want it? Bathroom, Cigarette, or What ever.
3A- Why should they be able to have a break when it's your turn? Example: you just made an important run & won the game, Why should they be able to take a break and ruin your momentum?

4- If they are granted a break how long should it be 5-10-15 minutes?
4A- Agreed 10 Minutes MAX

5- If they are late to a match shouldn't that be their (BREAK)?
5A- They already used time why not use it as their break? Why should I have to wait 10 minutes?

6- If they are later than 15 Minutes late should they forfeit the whole match? Or should there be some sort of time limits? something like after 15 min 1 game loss every 5 or 10 minutes after that 1 game loss for every 5 or 10 minutes?
6A- Agreed :-)

I think you will find that most players will rarely use 30 seconds on very many shots.

I agree that a break can only be taken by the player whose turn it is at the table.

Because have you ever been in a match and early on during said match had a sudden and uncontrollable urge to take a dump??? You cannot deny a person the need to take care of this urgent matter.

Personally, I think shot clocks are bad for pool and I HATE slow play. I think it's useful to suggest to players that routine shots should not take longer than 30 seconds but nobody should be timed in situations where a thought-out and intelligent shot is necessary.

How you address this in your tournament depends on a number of things. Do you currently have a slow play issue? If so, are you able to identify who the slow players are or is the entire event running slow? How is the tournament impacted by ending late (venue expense, organizer expense, player discontent)?

If you have one guy in a weekly tournament that routinely takes 2 hours to complete a match while the rest of the field takes 30 minutes, I would tell him to speed it up or risk being banned from play. If it's half the field that takes forever, you may consider looking at the length of match or specific rules that might be causing slow play (rack your own does wonders to speed up a match).

No matter what you do, I think it's important to think outside the box before rushing to a shot clock. A world of problems are introduced once you go there beginning with who is going to watch the clock.

How to stop slow play in tournament

The last 4 tournaments that I played in did not finish :-(

What ruins a tournament more? A shot clock? or not finishing?

If people normally shoot faster than 30 seconds whats the problem?

If the balls get re-arranged and the simple mind can't figure out how to make a shot in 20 seconds Just ask for an extension?

Also I have seen players sit around for a lenth of time Then when their match is called they go have their Cigarette or whatever break.

OK time to get off this thread before I need my BP medication LOL

Thanks everybody for your valuable input :-)

Ive actually been trying to slow my game down a bit and spend a bit more time trying to see the exact contact point, and taking my time getting square on that line.

I was struck watching Archer v Strickland this weekend how deliberate they both were.

If those two can take their time between shots, I should be too. If it tilts my opponent, all the better.

Since we are talking tournaments, there should be rules. If there are no rules about shot-clocks, you shouldn't expect your opponents to play the way you want them too. If you can't deal with the lack of a shotclock, don't play. If there are rules, talk to your opponent and then the TD if you think your opponent is in breech of them.

Slow play makes pool unwatchable, and I'd rather forfeit than play a slow player.

If this game wants to stop dying it MUST speed up. I'd say 10 secs is plenty. No time outs, no breaks, no nothing.

How many cigarette breaks does a baseball pitcher get?
They don't need them!

Slow players go away :-)

LOL well everybody don't think like us !!!!

Take that both ways. I have seen players slow play themselves righjt out of their own game. Now thats funny.:rotflmao1:

This thread just reminded me of one of the worst tournaments I've been apart of.

It was 8 ball scotch doubles and we never got to finish. Between our first and second match we had w 2 hour wait despite there being 3 open tables. Then about 4 games into our second match the guy running the tournament told us we were playing too slow and were holding up the whole tournament. I've been playing in town for about 15 years and have never been told I play too slow so this really bothered me, especially since we had a 2 hour wait.

By the end everyone was so mad and it was 3 in the morning so he just gave us our money back. I'm never going back there.

I hate slow play. Use to have players in the APA go to the bar, the bathroom, their car, whatever just to slow me down. Game's not that complicated.

In golf, it's called a 4 1/2 hour round...

My thoughts exactly! 9 ball is not chess...

I'm always watching the layout of the table as my opponent shoots. I generally have a good idea of where he's gonna leave me before he misses so it doesn't take me long to decide on my next shot.

Well thats the way real Pool Players are. the rest are just bangers that want to look like they know what they are doing.

Put a time clock on 90% of the slow players & you will find out they really can't play.
