Slow Play

I do not watch my opponent very closely if they play slow, have super bad mechanics or do not play very well.I just look away and glance over once in a while to see if they have shot yet.Weather or not they are playing slow deliberately or not is irrelevant to me.When in my chair I just try to think positive and be ready to execute my next shot.To me its all about not focusing on my opponent no matter who is at the table.

Slow play can effect run-out 9-ball players who need to get in a rhythm to run racks but to me the only way to combat this is to bear down on my turn at the table to make sure that I hit enough balls to get in stroke.

Excellent response. I try to do exactly the same.

Unfortunately it's the same as in golf. The slow player will screw up the fast player's game, but the fast player's game has no effect on the tortoise.

When I began this thread, it was in the interest of finding methods of increasing my ability to control factors of my success, through perception of what I have no control over, namely the actions of an opponent. Upon reading replies that seem to cover the spectrum, of how one should not only consider, but perceive and in some cases react to slow play, it indicates there certainly is no consensus. I was interested in hearing from a slow player and appreciate differences in the mindset of competition. That being said, I try as hard as I can to be understanding and respectful in cases, where it seems obvious to me, there is a method to their madness. Because I have some experiences that make me feel they might just be prolonging the agony, when the outcome is almost a forgone conclusion, I become irritated. I truly thank everyone for their replies to this thread, and believe there is a lot of insight. To ignore it would be more than difficult, to react emotionally would probably create more problems, I believe the right answer is in reply #23 referencing caution upon returning to the table after a painful wait to get there. After all, as someone expressed so poignantly, you're only sitting down because you missed !

I play slow and it bothers me because I am considerate of the other person and how it effects them. I feel that if I am in a hurry then I am just in a hurry to miss so I take my time when I am at the table. Now on the other hand if you don't like slow play then just don't miss.
