slow shooters?

I tend to be a very quick shooter, and often get taken out of stroke when I play slow players. How would you combat that?

Don't let them at the table? :D

If slow shooters are messing with your game - it's *you* who is letting them mess with your game. No one is in your head but you. Pool is 90% (at least) mental.

help everyone out: shoot them in the head.

or...do whatever you can to ignore their turn. i'll get in a conversation with someone while i'm waiting. sit down, put your cue down, you'll have plenty of time to pick it up when he misses.

One league night I shot, probably, the SLOWEST shooter in the entire county. Anyway... I typically get aggrevated at slow shooters, but this time, I took it upon myself to shoot SLOWER than him. It threw off HIS game,a dn won 3-0. A great psycological hustle.

Play tough safeties on them. The longer they look at impossible shots, the more they steam.

I remember playing in action games against guys on coke, the best defence was to slow play them, they would sit in their chair bouncing up and down so when they did get a shot they were likely to miss, one stroke and fire, it would drive them crazy and take their rythem away,

When someone slow plays me it dosent bother me a bit never has, well it did the first year i played, just because i was excited to play but after a year, it made no difference. I never slow play people unless they are on drugs and that was 20 years ago. Now I just play. Like Paqul Newman said "You can shoot when I miss" or something like that.

Coming from a golf background before pool, I've had to wait 20 minutes to take a shot quite a few times on some nasty backed up par 3's so waiting in pool doesn't even compare. It used to stress me out when I was younger, but I finally learned that there are just some things you can't control or worry about so I developed a waiting zone where I would just tune out and relax, think about a song or look at a tree until it was time to go. No biggie.

You can't subordinate yourself to things you can't control.

Hope this helps!:D

play a game in your head where you look at the table layout and imagine you have ball in hand and plan your runout. Or look where he is probably going to shoot and try to guess where the cue ball would be left if he misses and then plan a runout or move from that position on the table with his missed ball relocated to the jaws where you think he will shoot.

These mental excercises improve your game guaranteed. Also use this time to really visualize how you are going to walk to the table and chalk up and your warmup strokes and visualize how you will make the shot and even create a visual of you walking over to shake his hand after you make the match winning shot and what you will say to him. For instance, "You played fairly well."

LOL! that is the funniest thing! anyway, it definitely is in my head. That's why I just can't play straight pool although I can and will take my time to plan my shots when it's my turn, but playing against a good player that can run a few racks drives me crazy. I've thought about conversing with others, but then I might inadvertantly shark them so I try to keep quiet. I just get excited and find myself a very "zoney" player so once I get out of rhythm, it all goes to hell. :)

I didn't realize pool was a speed contest. Apologies to those I offended by taking my time thinking about a shot...

I just wouldn't play slow players unless it was in a tournament and I had no choice. They drive me up a wall. Johnnyt

There's taking time thinking about a shot and then there's standing there, down on the shot, stroking, stroking, stroking, stopping, starting to stroke again, stroking, standing up, walking to the other side of the table, getting down, stroking, stroking, standing back up and going back to where you started, going down, stroking, stroking... etc etc ad nauseum. :P

X2....that's why it's always good to carry a deck of cards, or some good cigars, or maybe some Crown in your golf bag - helps pass the time :D I hate slow play in golf, it's annoying, and my back tries to freeze up unless it's 100 degrees, and then I'm just miserable....damn tournament rounds taking 6+ hours in the damn heat, just makes me wanna

I hate slow play....

Back to topic, it doesn't seem as bad in pool.....most people I run into either shoot medium, quick, or with a good flow....I have only run into a few slow players, and unfortunately two of them play on my wed night league team.....if I wanna leave before midnight, I gotta split the two up :D Apparently, some dumbazz parent once told them that they should take their time, and that their special, and they deserve it, and all that crap.....and so they have no concept of consideration for other peoples time

EDIT - OOPS....to answer your question, when it's their turn, relax....grab a stool, start up a conversation, drink a cold one....do anything to keep you patient and it's not a bad idea to slow down a bit yourself......slow players lull you to impatience and bad shots....

This is what I do...works like a charm every time. Sometimes I'll wait for them to miss and them lay my cue on the table and step outside. I played a guy once that got down to stroke for about 30 seconds. Then walked around the table. He did that 4 times and then decided to take a piss BEFORE HE SHOT. He came back and missed. I almost *****slapped the guy.

If it's in a tournament, just go grab the td and he'll probably put the guy on a shot clock. If it's a money match, just play slower and take lots of breaks. Try to get into his head more than he's in yours. If it's a "just for fun" game (what are these anyway), just don't play him.

Thanks for the clarification...I guess I'm not "slow", just deliberate. I do like to survey the table before I shoot, make a run-out plan (even if I don't pull it off) then take my time lining up my shots.
