Smokey Mountain Shootout

I hope to see everyone at the Smokey Mountain Shootout again this year. Anyone in the Waynesville, NC area should make plans on being there. It is one of the best tournaments I attend each year.

Mike, could you post the info about this tournament? I keep hearing about it each year after the fact, when it's already over. :(

Last year, this tournament filled up way in advance. I think the venue is bar boxes; is that correct?

What is the name of the host pool room, the dates, entry fee, and phone number if one wanted to find out more?

Thanks.

Tournament Awareness: Word of Mouth!

I did a search for "Smokey" on this Discussion Forum and came up with the dates of this tournament, which begin tomorrow: April 22-24. Players meeting is at 7:00 p.m., Friday.

Limited to 128 players, the phone number to call is (828) 456-3138. I did call the number and received a recording which said: "Please leave a message."

There is no mention of this tournament anywhere on Google or the Tournament Calendar section of this forum.

I am unable to find out WHERE the pool room venue site is. Some posts say this event is in Waynesville, NC and others say Asheville, NC.

I look forward to reading all about it, most likely after it takes place, once again, this year. It seems this is a very popular once-a-year event, but I cannot find one tidbit of useful information about it anywhere on the Net.

Jam,

I believe there is a wheelchair event as well that coincides with it...but I am already commited to a tourney this weekend and playoffs Sunday in APA as well as the following weekend a tourney back home in Starkville. You guys got any big plans the weekend of the 29th?

Busy little fella I plan on being.

Hey Jam,

This is a benefit tournament they hold annually to help the ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens) of Haywood County, NC. It is run by a guy named Gary Caldwell whose daughter is affiliated with the group. It has been going on for about 15 or 16 years now. The tournament is held the last weekend in April each year at the Haywood County Fairgrounds in one of the big Expo buildings there. It is in Waynesville, NC (about 20 miles west of Asheville). It is held on bar tables. It is limited to the first 128 paid and it does fill up more quickly each year. I sent my money in around the first of March, and was told that I got one of the final 5 spots available. Last year, I was told that there were 81 on the waiting list to play.

Most people go for the social aspect, and to help the cause, because everyone who helps and works the tournament is so nice. The payouts are decent, though, and the calcutta is usually well into the thousands, and this brings some of the big horses in to play, which again boosts the calcutta. There are normally around 8-10 champions. But the rest are medium speed players, so if someone gets a good draw, they can make it pretty far into the tournament.

The ladies make home cooked hamburgers, hotdogs, etc. on the grill there and the food is excellent. They also sell tickets for a steak dinner that's cooked on the grill on Saturday night, and that's alot of fun, too. There is some action, but one does not feel out of place if you don't play that well. It has turned into a family type event. I look forward to seeing friends there that I know I will only see once a year.

I asked Gary about figuring a way to open the tournament up to everyone, but he says that he really doesn't have the room or staff to grow it much bigger. Also, he says that he doesn't want to take a chance on some change in the tournament that would cause people who enjoy the way it is to stop playing.

In fact, I think I remember Keith playing (and I think he won) the tournament. I have played almost every year, and I think it was in the early 90's that he played and won. You may ask him if he remembers every going. It would be fun for you (and Keith). There are plenty of nice people to socialize with while the tournament play is going on. You need to definitely look into attending next year.

Hey Shorty,

There is a big Wheelchair event the same weekend. I want to say it is some type of National Championship, or National Qualifier, but I'm not really sure. It is usually on Wednesday and Thursday and finishes on Friday before the Shootout. There are alot of the wheelchair guys who play the Shootout. In fact, last year several of the wheelchair guys made it pretty deep into the tournament. Maybe next year we will see each other there.

Yeah I plan on trying to make a few wheelchair tournaments eventually. Right now I have very little time between working and raising two kids and doing the family thing. I been concentrating on APA 8 ball and doing pretty well. Also been working on my cue and getting some mods done to it.

Sounds like a great event and I wish you luck with it!

I'll look you up when I get there.

The players meeting begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. for the Smokey Mountain Shootout! B.J. Ussery said he had prepaid his entry fee for last year's Smokey Mountain Shootout, but I think he ended up going to a tournament in Florida at that time, if memory serves me correctly.

It sounds like a really nice venue. Every single tournament I have ever attended in the Carolinas has been a really cool experience: the genuinely nice people, the excellent Southern cuisine, and the topnotch competition.

I always seem to hear about this tournament too late, unfortunately for me and mine, but now that I know it occurs at the end of April, I'll be looking for it next year.

I'd imagine it draws quite a few young guns, to include B.J., Hennessee from Tennessee, Little John, Sparky, Keith Bennett, and Tony Watson. Please provide some updates for those of us back home with inquiring minds. Pictures would be cool, too! :)

Hey Jam,

I'm not quite the photographer you are, but I will take my camera. I'll post a report when I return Monday.

Did you ask Keith if he remembered playing there 10 - 12 years ago?

Mike

Hey Mike,

This is right up my alley. How exactly do they raise the money...a portion of the entry? What is the entry? What are the normal payouts? How did he get such a BIG draw? Where do the tables come from? Who sets the tables up? I have sooooo many more questions....but those are the general ones. We have a small tourney every year for a charity. A local cuemaker donates cues for the first 3 places. All entry goes towards the charity. I am dying to do something bigger...something with draw. Thanx for any help.

Mike, how did you end up doing this weekend???
Hey Timberly,

I finished 25-32. I got a pertty tough draw. I played the last match on Friday night and didn't start my match till around 1:30am. We didn't finish till around 3am. Not making excuses, but when you are up for work at 5:45am on Friday morning, ride 4 hrs, then finish your first match at 3am.....Well, I ain't as young as I used to be :D .

I made a good run through the one loss side, though. I think I won 6 or 7 matches on Saturday, winning a couple of hill-hill matches and not losing out till the last match on Saturday night. I lost to Scott Rabon from Columbia, who won the event last year. I played well against him, but he won the flip and ran the first 4 against me. I think I ended up losing 7-3, only getting 2 shots the entire match.

It was a fun tournament, but cold as hell! It snowed some Saturday, and alot Sunday morning. There were more champions there than usual. Larry Nevel, Jonathan Hennessee, Tony Watson, BJ Ussery, Stevie Moore, Bryan Tyler, Brian White, Jeff Abernathy, Scott Rabon, Jesse Middlebrooks, Mike Gulyassy, Jim Jennings, and many other player about a half notch below that crowd.

The hospitality was great as always, and Gary Caldwell worked hard to put on a top notch event. I'm sure everyone had a great time.

You playing at DBC this weekend Mike?
Hey Joe,

I think the tournament is next weekend. This Saturday is the 30th, and I think they have it the first full weekend of the month. I will either be there or at the Viking event at Gametime in Greenville, SC.

First place was 1200, Calc was 2000. The tournament paid 16 places and the calcutta paid 8. The field was the best ever. Stevie was playing better than I have ever seen him. The tournament had over 100 on a waiting list above the 128 field. Nevel, Watson, Stevie, Brian, Hennessee and many other strong bar box players all show for this tournament despite the relatively small payout. Nobody knows why the interest is so strong for the tournament but it grows year after year. The proceeds above the 5000 payout go toward the ARC of Haywood County. There are complaints every year about the payout amount but the same people just keep showing up. It's hard for me to explain why I continually go but I will probably be there next year also. Me and 127 others who are early enough to reserve a spot.
