o.k. mike templeton or some one with inf about the tourny lets have it had to stay with the wife this year, but would like to know the out come and any action i missed, STICK:D :D :D :D :D

Some of the final 16 are... Shannon Daulton, Stevie Moore, Scott Rabon, Tony Watson, Larry Nevel, young 15yr old champion from Hickory Adam Pendley are all unbeaten. Late, late last night in the loser bracket was Brian White beating Mike Gulyassy, Adam's brother Marcus Pendley, Chewtobacco Derek Leonard, Jonathan Pinegar. Gets kind of fuzzy after that...funny how that happens once you are eliminated. I got ran over by some guy with a gold "Hustler" beltbuckle...Larry Nevel.
Don't be shocked if the kid Adam wins...he just won the recent Viking stop in Hickory as well. If anyone doesn't know this young champion...he destroyed Earl Strickland in the final of a big tourney a couple of years ago when he was only 13...what a bright future possibly awaits this youngster. Mike Templeton was too busy wheeling & dealing in the cue trades...he picked up a nice Southeast and two nice Varney's that I know of...I'm sure he'll give us an update later.

I met Atam and Marcus both at that tournament a few years ago. I started working with them and gave the one of my stroketrainers. Both of them would do 500 strokes a day each arm and man did their game take off. We took them to Detrot Michigan to the Jr. Nationals and Atam really put on a show there. He ended up getting 2nd the tournament. I think Marcus got around 9th. I really beleave that Atam is going to be one of the best out there. His Parents are mekeing sure that they is staying in school right now and that is why we havnt been able to get him in the US Open. The pool world should pay close attention to both of these kids because they are coming. I'm pulling for both of them.

I just got home from NC. The remaining players were Larry Nevel in the hot seat, Tony Watson, Stevie Moore and I think Scott Rabon. If I am not mistaken, Stevie and Scott match winner to play Tony for the L bracket. Shannon D got 5-6, Hennessee got 7-8. I will try to post results when I get them.

Just got back

I just got back from the tournment and Larry Nevel won. He beat Tony Watson 9-7 for the win. He was shooting great. He kicked a ball in his match with Adam P and ran out. He then ran 4 more racks in a row. That will take the wind out of your sails. Steve Moore came in 3rd. I think that Jeff Abernathy came in 4th. All the action was at a local pool hall called The Crooked Cue.

I thought Rabon beat Jeff Abernathy. Appreciate the correction.

Having just moved to SC, this was my first exposure to the Smoky Mountain Shootout. Thanks to Mike Templeton for telling me about it.

Not being from the area, the only players I'd heard much about were Shannon Dalton (mostly for one pocket) and Larry Nevel, but, Larry, only that I'd read his name mentioned here.

I now know, Larry Nevel is a major talent. That is obvious because he won the tournament. But he does all things well--great stroke, great shotmaker, creative, and excellent cueball control. He told me he's entering an IPT qualifying event next month, and I would not be suprised to see him do well or even win it. Nice guy, too. I wish him success.

Steve Moore was my biggest surprise. I had never heard one word about him before attending the tournament. But this guy is a fantastic player, as evidenced by the half dozen or so times his name has appeared as this event's winner. His patterns and precision position play, as well as his safety and overall knowledge, were just outstanding. I was hoping to see him play Larry in the final, but Steve inexplicable double hit a 1 to 9 combination against Tony Watson, when both were on the hill, to allow Tony to runout and win the match. It was an expensive mistake, for it not only cost Steve the match, but an additional $500 Steve and Tony had on the side.

Someone said Steve Moore has a room in Greenville, SC. Is that so?

Anyway, the SMS was a really fine event and I look forward to playing in it next year.

Oh, one last thing, this kid Adam is the real deal. He ran into a freight train when he played Larry Nevel, but this kid can really play. He reminds me of Ginky at a similar age.

I use to attend this tournament all the time and I have saw Stevie Moore there every time i was there. He keeps a low profile so he can gamble. I would say he is one of the best bar box player ever. This guy came through Roanoke Va. one time and really put on a show playing our best player at the time. They didn’t know him but i didn’t say anything because i don’t knock anyone's action. I know just about every player out there so i just do say anything when i see them. I think Scott Rabon could be one of the best players on the tour if he had the money to travel it. I watch him run around 10 racks in a row one time on a $20.00 challenge table at that tournament. As far as the tournament I know Gerry Caldwell that holds it and i think he doses a great job for the people in that area but the only thing that bothers me is if he keeps letting these players like Larry, Toney, Shannon and maybe even Stevie keep playing i am worried that a lot of the weaker players will stop playing in it. I know it has a waiting list and has had one for many years but after a while with all these top and some pro players entering i am hoping that it doesn’t hurt it. I was there year before last and i herd a lot of the players say that if they keep letting these players play that they feel like they are just throwing away their money and they would stop coming if it kept on. I hope this doesn’t happen and Garry lets these guys know. I am not a pro player but play pretty good and was going to a tournament and i kept winning week after week and it got to where no one would come anymore. So the bar owner ask me to stop playing because people said as long as i came they would not. Anyway i hope this doesn’t happen to the Smokey Mt. Shootout because it is a great tournament. I know these guys have to play somewhere i am just hoping it dosen't hurt that tournament

That sounds like a whale of a match that they are planning this week. I think it is cool that a lot of the great players are starting to match up playing 8 ball now more than in the recent past. I heard Stevie got the best of Cliff playing a short race not long ago. Stevie is hard to beat playing big or small table no matter what game is played.

I would have to agree about Steve's game. I doubt it would make a difference what sized table he plays on. His cueball control is very precise and he's really pool smart. He'd be tough for anyone to beat on any table. I can't believe I never even heard of this guy before this past weekend.

I wonder what game they'll play? Stevie has no chance against Joyner in even one-pocket , but I like Stevie in the other games. Keep us informed, Stick.

He did take a job with the post office which is why he didn't play in any of the first IPT qualifiers. He was at the DCC the last weekend and could've played. He ended up not liking the job (hearsay because I haven't talked to him since then). By this time all the qualifiers had been held except for Weert, which he went to & did pretty good, but not good enough.

The only way I could possibly see this happening (again, without talking to Stevie) is maybe Don's old place "The Golden Cue". I doubt it because Stevie likes Atlanta and he's trying to get onto the IPT. I just don't see him moving back to the Greenville-Spartanburg area... I've been wrong before though.

Ted, I don't know where you lived prior to moving to SC but Stevie pretty much stayed under the radar and was mostly known in the southeast. He started playing as a teenager. (14 or 15 I believe) He would hit the road for awhile & then come back home. Then he would quit playing pool completely for a couple of yrs. LOL, then one day he'd show up at a tourney & snap it off. I've always enjoyed watching his "comebacks". He's the only guy I know of that can take a lot of time off from pool and come back and hang with the best. Makes you wonder how scary he would be had he never stopped playing. ;)

stevie& cliff

i am almost sure stevie said 9 ball will find out and letr you know. I know both and your right stevie has no chance at one hole. STICK:D :D :D :D

I've been in NYC for 25 years, then Oregon the past 3, before moving to Greenville.

I could see how Stevie could give up the game for a while and still come back strong. He's got great mechanics and he plays smart. His position paths and patterns are classic. There is not a lot to tune up when you play that way.

I hope he does well in the IPT. He seems to be a class guy. When he double hit the match winning 9-ball combination in his semi-final with Tony Watson, he didn't moan and stomp around. He called it on himself and just handed over the cueball and sat quietly as Tony ran out.

That's Stevie... even when he was a teenager he was composed at the table. LOL, he sure could woof it up though. He & Red Willis barking at each other was a site... little Stevie (as he was called back then) and Red who had kids older than Stevie... sigh the good 'ol days. :(

Hope you like Greenville. I was born & raised there....not a bad "little" place. It's growing leaps & bounds...not so little anymore.

I miss Fountain Inn Red. He was truly one of the most colorful characters to enter a poolroom. Wow...what amazing stories he had...he could entertain a room for hours. And a jam up tournament director...his auctions would bring in twice the cash as others. He once asked me about buying one of my cues, I said "Red you already have one" he said "yes I know but Gulyassy and I are friends but I'm a bit pissed at him...bring the cue over here so he can see me pay you up real close!"
A fine player too. Definately taken off this earth way before his time. A couple of years ago at the SMS they had a huge photo of him framed really nice...and he was holding the cue I made for him and smiling like crazy. I still get the watery eyes thinking about it. I learned a lot about the game from him...and even more about making a game. God bless that man...I hope he is resting in peace. He is missed by many.
