smoking ban and the effect on poolhalls??

non-smoking rooms

it would be nice to get some input from room owners
the few that i know around cincy have complained about this since way before it passed and according to them, thier fears have become reality or will very shortly

My room isn`t anywhere near you folks, im in Pa, but I did a small survey a couple years ago and asked if I went non-smoking would they still come in, 95% said no they would go somewhere else or go to the bars.

Now if it would go non-smoking in the whole state I think they would come back and step outside to smoke.
I quit 4 years ago but still smoke with everyone else when I breath.

So you see, their statistics are totally meaningless. Just more politically correct B.S.

That's really impressive that your one experience with your doctor was so demonstrative as to render the statistics that Russ provided "totally meaningless." Yup, always a good idea to put more stock in isolated, anectodal incidents than CDC data (Russ didn't post the link, but this is the article his stats came from: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5425a1.htm).

By the way, I'm curious what in the world political correctness has to do with this? I didn't realize that public health research simply amounted to "politically correct B.S." - or is that just empty rhetoric and nothing more? I get annoyed at the way people bandy about this phrase to suit whatever purpose, like some invincible trump of an argument. Yes, I am offended by the term "PC!" "PC" is un-PC! :D

I'm just glad to see fewer and fewer people smoking in the US. The workplace smoking bans seem to be contributing to that. Most smokers want to quit. Anything that makes it a little more difficult to smoke, makes it a little bit easier to quit. And quitting's good for just about everybody (except the tobacco industry).

Andrew <--- thankful to shoot at a smoke-free poolhall, but wishes it would care about the health of my wallet as much as the health of my lungs...

Did you survey EVERYONE (non-smokers included) or just the smokers?

I wondered the same thing. That would mean that 95% of the customers are smokers. Even in bars, where I think more people are smoking than in true "pool rooms", I don't think the percentage is that high. If 100 people are in the place, 95 of them are smoking? Brutal.

Well, even if 95 out of 100 folks in a place were smokers, that doesn't mean they're all smoking at the same time. :P

Everyone that came in the room was asked the same question !
The ones that didn`t smoke just said they would still come in.

You said 95% said they'd go elsewhere. Was that 95% of the smokers? One would assume that the non-smokers would still show up if you took your room non-smoking - such a change would be to their benefit, if anything.

I'm curious what percentage of the smokers said they'd still come to your non-smoking room rather than go elsewhere so they could smoke - if any.

One thing you have to remember about asking your smoking customers a question like this.

If they think you are seriously considering going non-smoking, it is in their best interest to tell you they would not come back. Whether that is actually true or not.

So, they MAY, or MAY NOT come back. But the simple results of the poll don't tell you that, for sure.

Just something to keep in mind. :)

People that think that their way of life is better than everyone else’s and want everyone to follow it just because they are in the majority disgust me.

Muslims are in the minority in this country. Islam is clearly hazardous to people's health (this argument can be made, however fallaciously). What if we were to outlaw it here? Majority rules right?

I assume I win this thread.

Thank you

OK, I've read enough (actually way more than enough). The smoking lamp is now lit (in my garage that is, the wife won't allow it in the house).

First of all, I already won this thread, whether you choose to miss the point or not.:D

Secondly, why are you bothering with this topic when the real 9/11 conspirators are still on the loose?

ROFLMFAO

I started writing that post, then rephrased it, but forgot to take "non" out. Whoops!:o

I take it then you're going to give back the trophy you got for "winning the thread". :P

I don't have to give it back for the typo, but the committee is still reviewing the security video from the club I was at last night.

I just can't help myself

How do you get your stuff stolen when you are in between the door and the parking lot???? :D

Seems to me you would check your stuff immediately after coming back in, and keep an eye on the door in case anyone had stolen it.

Yer just making shiznit up, man!:p

Russ

I can't believe you of all people made this statement.
Russ, the "government" requires 2 exits for all buildings.

being a smoker, when its nice out, i personally dont mind going outside at all, however, when its raining or freezing cold, thats another story. i know a room owner who was working on putting up a tent like structure behind his pool hall with a couple space heaters for smokers. what business owners dont realize is that there is a way to cater to both parties, it might take a little extra work and a couple extra dollars (such is the case in my buddies place) however, it may be worth it. at my buddies place, (ive been going there since i was 14 im 21 now) its always been 85% smokers. when i first started going there i was a chewer, not a smoker and it didnt bother me. Another option he is looking at is a bus. it may sound weird but he owns an old school bus and was going to park it behind the hall as a smoke bus. there are many ways that business owners can cater to both crowds. me personally ive always been on the businessmans side as to whether or not to ban it. however we dont always have that luxury. before you know it, theyll be banning certain foods and drinks too because there not healthy.

also, since the bans, ive gone back to chewing during tournaments so i dont have to take smoke breaks. I cant even count how many non smokers wish there wasnt a smoking ban then so they didnt have to see the spit in the bottle.

Sheesh

There must be 20 threads on here about smoking vs nonsmoking pool rooms. :(

Most of them deteriorate into big government flames or anecdotes about how someone knew some guy who made trillions of dollars in a pool room and it went broke because someone couldnt smoke:rolleyes: . 12 states have banned smoking completely at this point and two more are supposed to by years end (2007). Obviously the economic impacts are fairly minor or these 12 states would be bankrupt. People still smoke in these states. People still play pool in these states. Smokers just need to be dragged into the next level of reality. Non-smoking will be nationwide in our lifetime. Get used to it. It doesnt mean there will not be pool rooms anymore. Just means you might have to *gasp* walk out to the patio to smoke...OMG!! Is that exercise??!!! Economic models in general are constantly changing. Business owners that cannot adjust will be the ones that go under. Owners that want to cater to smokers will put in patios. Owners that want to cater to nonsmokers will do something different.
