sneaky blank wood

I am having John Davis making me a sneaky pete blank and am toying with the idea of buying the wood myself, just so that it is rare and maybe cooler looking. I am thinking about using Chechen (a type of rosewood) for the back and curly pyinma for the front. The only problem is that I cant find it kiln-dried anywhere.

What will this mean for the cuemaker? Can you use non-dried wood? Will it have to sit?

It would be better off letting John come up with the woods himself, and tell the artist to do his thing.

If you get a piece of wood that is not dry, you are looking at either having it professionally dried, or letting it sit on the shelf for a couple years. If you are totally set on that wood, you can find some, it will just take some searching. Type in what you're looking for, and check around the exotic lumber places and ask them questions. They will be able to tell you exactly what to do.

Those lumber guys are all for the most part connected to each other in some way and they will know someone, who has a brother that is married to a cousin's friend, and that guy's great grand mother is the one who might be able to put you in touch with the guy who lives back yonder with the secret stash of 100 yr old rare wood and can hook u up..........for a small fee, of course......
 
I have dry curly pyinma if you need a piece, Chris. I have curly chechen, too, but it's not long enough for the back. It's only 18". You may try looking on ebay for chechen. It's often sold as "carribean rosewood" or "carribean walnut". It's all relatively inexpensive but tough to find, especially figured.
 
John will need to let them sit for a while if they aren't dried.also that Pyinma may be a little weak for an uncored front(just my opinion).

Sup Eric? I just need something to put on the front with kingwood on the back. Ill take both pieces. PM me a price. I owe you a pen too. You gonna be in Ohio again?
 
Yeah, i'll be going to the show again. Are you guys coming down? Just email me an addy & i'll ship the wood next time i'm out shipping stuff. I have a couple boxes of wood to send out so it's about that time.

Yeah sounds good. Beer and a tshirt on us again. Heres the thing. I am on a timeline and need to find dried wood in the next 2 weeks or so. I am going to see John Davis around May 1st and have to have wood in hand by then. I am then sending the blank to Jim Buss who will deliver a sneaky to the show in Ohio.

Also, how much do you want for the pyinma. I found it at one place but I'd rather get it from you, given your knowledge of woods and the sick lookin stuff you always seem to find.

Anyway, pm or email me (cbaumann212@gmail.com) a cost and an address or PayPal, Ill send you some $ and we can get the ball rollin. As far as Ohio, I am picking up a cue and want to browse. Hell we'll do dinner, beer, and pool again this year. Not sure if Richard is going or not but Chris and I are coming again for sure. That was fun last year.

I'll get you a piece of pyinma set aside, and look for some other stuff in the shop that might work well. My pyinma is nuts figured, might be a lil unstable for a sneaky front but John knows how to core so it should be fine.
