Sneaky Pete

So here's the thread to really show your talents. I can easily think (yeah, really) that there must be a lot of individuals who has experiences playing SP ques. What i'm after is a hopefully good and even a bit detailed discussion between customs and factory ques.

And why to give that problem to you? Simply because i'm about to buy a new que and that, of course, will be SP. Only problem is that my funds are limited so for me it will be about max. 300$ but there must be some others who like to find some more facts too.

Simply said: help me out.

if i was gonna buy a sneaky (which i just may before im done) it would hands down be a bob frey. Its got the piloted shaft inserts i like, and he made the sneakys for scruggs its my understanging, and most everyone loves how they hit. I hear alot of good things about jerico too.......but id go frey, althought i dont think you can get out for 300.

Another great choice would be a Gilbert J/B if you can find one on the used market you could probably get it for around $300.

Sneaky Pete's

I have a Sneaky Pete from Shurtz Custom Cues (in Wichita, Ks.) with stainless steel piloted joint that was $190 new. Phenolic or w-to-w joint is less. His basic customs start at $275 with choiice of 4 wood types and linen wrap. Bob Owen is the cuemaker.

THX for your input so far. Those mentioned custom SPs really are interesting option, only that i don't have any possibilities to try them before buying...well, bought a couple of cars and harleys that way too, so not the biggest issue.

BUT it really would be nice to hear some (horror??)stories about factorymade SPs too.

And Jeff, you can bet your a...whatever that i've seen that post from jazznpool ;-)

Dufferin make a nice SP Cue for about $100.00, and there are many still available for sale. You need not spend $300.00 for a SP.....

The Frey SP I bought new last month does not have piloted inserts. It is a 3/8 x 10 wood to wood joint (with collars).

I like it well. It hits nice, and I like the figured Cocobolo.

You're right, they are a bit over $300 (but not too much).

Dufferins would be harder to find since they arent being made anymore. Another good production sneaky is the Schmelke SPs. Meanwhile, my current cue is a sneaky that was finished few weeks back and i love it. See if anyone in yur hall has any and ask to try them out. Even with a production unless you go to a store its still somewhat a shot in the dark as to if you would like it. I have never tried a Frey SP but it seems the general consensus is that they are great cues. Personally i would get one if i had the money.

So, tell me, how does that Dufferin plays? At least it looks on pics just fine; old style, wood-to-wood...all what i think the SP should be. And i can't deny that fact that price is very tempting.

Most factory or cheap sneaky petes are made with low quality shaft wood to save money and most of them also have the shaft insert which just ruins it as far as I'm concerned.

You can get on ebay right now and buy a sneaky for 30 bucks with a Morri tip, Morri's cost half of that, so how are they making money? CHEAP parts, CHEAP wood

I'll vouch for that, although, since they've gone out of business, getting a replacement shaft could be difficult. I really really like my dufferin not so sneaky, sneaky pete.

~edit~ as for how it plays, it has a very solid hit and is well balanced. my only issue with it is the clearcoat on the shaft gets sticky on occasion.

I like my Sneaky Pete from Wes Hunter, he makes a great cue anyway. If I were to get a factory SP, I would go with a Huebler. I always liked the way they hit.

FWIW,

Jim

I bought a Dufferin for the other half, and have played with it myself several times. If i had $100.00 for a Cue, and nothing more I would by a Dufferin.

Here is a link to a Place that has Dufferins in Stock.

Another possibility is a Huebler Sneaky. They play pretty good and I could probably pick one up for you around here and bring it to Brussels with me. I believe that they run in the neighborhood of $150 or so, definitely less than $200. Let me know if you're interested.

Most Huebler sneakies I've tried hit better than the Dufferin sneakies I've tried, fwiw.

I have a Meucci Sneaky Pete with a Red Dot shaft I got for around $300. I like how it hits. And is the "Sneakiest" of the Sneaky Petes I have found. Nothing to identify it. Compared to a Lucasi sneaky. Of course a real player will spot any good sneaky easily but I like the concept of them.

Here is my Meucci Original...

It is probably one of my best hitting sticks. I like how dirty it is. I have people try to grab it every now and then wanting to play with it.

I shot with a Bob Frey but I did not really like how it hits. I also felt like I couldn't get good english out of it. Mainly on backups. But I still want one bad.

OK, as a foreigner...do i read you guys correct that when we talk about cheaper SPs, i say around 100$, then it's either Dufferin or Schmelke, and those seems to be in stock in the same place.

What about then if we go on a bit more expensive, like 150$ to 200$?

And yes, of course a custom made is another story, but it can be that i'll go with that a bit later when both my funds and skills are more solid :p

I play with my dz sneaky, occasionaly buy scruggs sneakies because I like them as well. Dz hits a little softer I think than the scruggs. Been meaning to buy a fry. Like the schon steel joint sneaky, and the joss sneakies as well.

Only one I've kept for more than a year is the dz, and have no desire to sell it.
