Sneaky Petes!!! Josey, Pechauer, Little Al Romero or Putnam???

YES! Actually go to see Little Al if you can. Hint: offer to buy him pizza and discuss your cue with him there while you eat, you will get some serious points :)

I can do both the pizza and Spanish. Any certain pizza toppings or place he favors?

Thanks again for the tips!

BUMP!!!

Anybody know what toppings Al Romero likes? I'm going to be stopping by tomorrow or this week for sure.

I have owned about every top cuemaker's cue (over 300 custom cues have passed through my hands and I played with them all) and if it tells you anything I still play with my 60" Josey keith made about 10 years ago love the feedback from the cue

Pechauers cues play great. Have an excellent finish.
Josey...I started to move on a Josey. His rep is excellent. His sneakies are priced to sell. There is an 8 month turn around...I do not want to wait that long. If they were readily available I would have purchased one.

If those are your choices... I would go with Josey... hit great and are gorgeous.

I can't comment on the Romero cues without trying one for myself.
I have owned 3 Pechauer's & 3 Josey's.
Both cues have a great finish, balance & play excellent.
The Pechauer butts are slightly smaller than a Josey & the taper is different.
I have noticed that a Pechauer hits solid, but has a softer feel.
Whereas the Josey is a consistant resonate feel & definitely is solid.
For the money of these 2 cues, I would choose the Josey hands down.
The Putnam cue is a good playing cue too, but lacks the experience as a cuemaker compared to the others.
Just my 2 cents :D

Are you just limited to the makers you listed? I only ask because I looked at one of Chris Nitti's SP's at the SBE this past weekend and for $350 I think it was the best deal in the house.

Chris builds an exceptional cue and the SP I looked at had very nice ringwork and the finish was flawless.

Just throwing it out there as something you may want to consider.

Well, if I had my choice, I'd pick the Nitti SP... Great playing cue...!!!

Nothing against Lil AL, He builds an excellent playing cue...but I ordered a cue from him 2 years ago,...but I believe he lost my order. No big deal, as I've been buying bigger cues...but I really wanted to have one of his cues in my collection.

Josey Basic Cocobolo ($360)
Is a great price. plus great resale value...

is this the standard price? his website is showing $430, unless I'm not looking in the right place?

I'm debating on whether to order one now, or try to pick one up at next year's SBE

He has different types of sneakies. From basic to some very nice inlays.

i've got a friend that's in the same boat. he paid the guy 1/2 on the cue as a deposit and here we are 2 years later and still not word that the cue's on the way.

the guy's nice as can be and builds a great cue but it's bs that he's taking so long without so much as a call to explain why

Sneakies

****Edit**** I decided on the Little Al Romero. I bumped this thread to ask if anybody knows what toppings Little Al likes on his pizza. I will be going into his shop tonight.

I plan on purchasing an interim Players SP in the next couple of weeks and upgrading the tip. I'm just tired of playing off the wall and want something to call my own.

I will be purchasing my Players SP from Crown City Billiards in Pasadena.

I stopped by on Tuesday just to see what kind of cheap SP's he had to offer. To my surprise, Corey Harper pointed me to the Players which I was considering after seeing it online.

I would much rather support a local business and much more so knowing he's a pro player. Gotta keep the money local!

He was extremely helpful in answering any question I had on just about any topic that popped into my mind. If anybody is in the Los Angeles area and planning on making a purchase, big or small, I highly suggest they go through him.

I only plan on playing with my Players SP for a few months. I then plan to buy one of the cues mentioned above. I was originally set on the Pechauer but keep hearing good things about the others mentioned.

Keep in mind, I'm relatively new to the game so I don't know much about quality and feel. I just know I like heavier cues and I'm not into fancy inlays. That being said, I do want to keep the cue for a good while.

So I'm asking for your guys' experience and opinion. Which would you choose and why? Also, please mention if you've only played with the one you're recommending or if you have also played with one of the others in question.

Pechauer (retails for about $270):

Little Al Romero SP (beginning at $220)
I've just recently began considering these and after a quick search on AZB, lots of people have nothing but good things to say about them.

I couldn't find pics but he's another local guy. Hard Times is about 20-25 minutes from where I live. So supporting a local business is an added bonus.

Now lastly, Shawn Putnam SPs. I have no idea what his SP's start at. That being said. I'd like to keep the price range at about 300-400 dollars.

Thanks in advance!

Wish I could speak to all four, but the only one I've tried (so far; I really want to try the Josey) is the Pechauer. I've had several and sold them to friends, when I should really have kept one!

There are many other quality sneakies out there. I'd recommend trying a Frey, a Prather, a Schmelke, and the original Predator sneaky (green veneer) if you can find one.

But as another poster stated, what we like may not be right for you...

I hit with Josey's before and they all seemed to hit a little soft to me but it could have been the tips.

I had a SLY and a Frey for a while and really like the hit on those SP's.

Only hit with one Lil Al SP and it was only OK.

Hope you like whatever you get.

I just want to say thanks to everyone for their input. I'm about to head out to Hard Times to visit Little Al and place an order.

I'll buy one of the nicer Josey SPs down the road. Right now I really want some in-person advice when buying my first cue. He also mentioned that he has some samples available to help me decide on what I want.

Thanks again. I'm really excited!!!

Big fan of Hard Times. I've seen Efren shoot there a couple times. Should really get a picture or something.
