So I had a thought the other day...

... and I was thinking For games like 9 ball and 8 ball instead of having a "random" rack to start of the game why not come up with a "this is the order of the balls for every rack". I mean in 9 ball the 1 ball and 9 have a spot they must be in so why not for the rest. Or has this been thought about already and I'm just late to the pary?

part 2

this then lead me to thinking about 9 ball and why not play for points. For example each ball is 1 point and the 9 is say 3 points. That way you could race to a set number of points and it would take out a bit of the "luck" factor, i mean its all well and good if the person you're playing gets the 9 off the break its only 3 points, where as some one that runs the rack would end up with 11. I think in this situation alternating breaks would work out best.

I think your onto something...it has made sense for some of the leagues to do it (i think just for that reason), but ur just talking when ur gambling right? Keeping score that way may be a bit much to have to keep track of as moving coins on a table isn't hard enough to remember sometimes. Just some thoughts though.

True it would be one of those things you wouls need a chalk board or something like that. As for the gambling aspect i was sort of thinking it would be good for a set match not so much walk in to a room or bar and try to strike up a game with some random. Or in a tournament setting as an alternative to races to "x number of games".

Not sure what you were thinking as far as whether this is for gambling or fairness in tournaments or just to help yourself run out, but it's been thought of.

RYO (Rack-your-own) 9-ball players often try to rack in a certain order to help make the runout easier on themselves. I like the pattern:
1
78
395 (5 goes down)
46
2

You just described APA 9-ball, except the 9 is only worth 2 points. 10 points available in each rack.

Here's a new one:
Two pool players will think of a number between one and five and the closest one to the number three will go first. When the starting player is ready, said player will indicate said readiness by raising his/or her cue stick over their head and a midget will begin riding around the table on a unicycle. Each time around said table said midget will reach into a basket filled with numbered balls, pull one out, and throw it on to the table. If the ball that is thrown out is not pocketed by the next time said midget comes around, the player's score will be reduced by the number on that ball. Should the player who is currently at the table accidentally, or otherwise, bump into said midget as said midget makes his circuit around the table and knocks said midget to the floor, said player is disqualified. The winner of the match will be the player with the lowest number of points after four hours. It is recommended that more than one midget be used or rest periods be provided. A name has yet to have been chosen for this game, but I'm sure you all can come up with something appropriate. Sincerely yours, Tank Macanally, Director of Sports and Games for Steamer Recreational Enterprises Ltd.

P.S. In the spirit of politcal correctness we at Steamer Recreational will now refer to a midget as a very diminuitive person.

took you long enough!

It took you long enough but I knew if you kept hanging around you would come up with at least one good idea!! Are we talking male or female midge, um, I think vertically challenged people might be the PC term, then again vertically challenged might be PC for drunk, I'm easily confused by all the PC crap.

I know it Hu. I'm drawn to it like flies to doody.
The midget idea was the best we could come up with at last month's board meeting. A gorrilla on a unicycle just wouldn't have worked.
