14.75? This would be considered an illegal tip, wouldnt it? The BCA rules clearly state that no tip over 14mm is allowed. Are other sanctioning bodys the same?

Thanx
Alex

Hi Donnie. First of all, did you get my reply to your pm? I've pm'd both you and Danny Harriman and have yet to get a reply. Sort of wondering if I did something wrong with the pm process.

Yes, I know (or I should say I knew) Andy Gilbert. Years ago, I went out to his house and saw the garage area where he was making his cues. One thing that truly impressed me was the time he took with the making of shafts - the very slow, long dry time, shallow cut method so it took months to turn out a quality shaft. In those days his entire work area was about 1/2 of a single car garage. My guess is that he has expanded a bit since then. :)

I played for a couple of years with a nice cue that Andy built. Really a beautiful cue with 13.2mm shafts and it played great. That cue set in my closet for years until I got a call from a fellow from Ash Grove. He wanted my cue.

Thinking I was probably never going to play again, I sold it to him for exactly what I had paid for the cue. Definitely should have kept it. Not only was it a great cue but my wife reminds me now and again..."See, I told you not to sell that cue!".

Donnie, do you remember "Hat". I kept trying and finally remembered the fellows name that I went out to Gilbert's with that day.

Water under the bridge and just one of many cues I've sold waaaaay too cheap. I probably sold that Gilbert for about $700 less than it was worth on the market even then.

Cue resembled this one except mine had a stainless joint and a bit more inlay.

One of the things I like to do is to be in a bar and use a POS house stick and beat the regulars with their two piece sticks.

If you can't play decent with a old POS house stick, there isn't a stick/shaft that will help you. Its all in the stroke, not the stick.

I've used a 314 and then 314-2 for years. Love the way Predators play. Tried on OB1 and it wasn't bad...but don't have a reason to get away from the Predator.

Here Here. However most bars have the worst Cues ever. I been to bars were the house cues were so Warped you could see it just by holding it. Or just had no tip.

About house cues: My local pool-hall (called Cueaction..) has 'Valley Supreme II' cues, best HC I've ever used!
Only about 2 years ago I started getting my own cues. Started with an Excalibur (now Cuetec..) with Earl's signature on it.
That's the only good thing about it.. Yeah, you know: With the fiberglass on the shaft.. Don't know the pin-size, nothing else I have fits..
Second one was the Meucci HOF-2, with a black dot-shaft. Much better, but don't really like the BD-shafts.
I now have about 35 cues (losing count..). And maybe twice the amount of shafts.. Examples of what I like:

a Gordon's from the Philly's (yeah, Snake Skin..).

2 Huebler's (reasons why? -see above in the thread).

Buffalo premium No.7 by Adam (not seen for sale in US),
best ever for the money (about $ 190, leather wrap!).

Some of my original Meucci's (pre-dot shafts, and Pred-Z2) e.g:
Jimmy Rempe, 95-17.

Carolina Customs (3/8 x 10).

Unplayed Patrick Navarro, just in last tuesday (gorgeous, been hearing good things about 'm).

My 'old faithfull' Adam Balabushka GB-6, leather wrap, 3 shafts:
1 original, almost new-> OK.
1 original, -turned down to 12 mm, overcooked spaghetti!-> Better.
1 BlackBoar, also 12 mm, Ivory ferrule-> The Best!

About Low deflection: Not sure, not to keen about laminated shafts- they feel Liveless to me.
Individual matter, although I do hear that some people who switched to a predator-shaft were potting more balls...
I found it took a lot of adjustment getting used to my Z2 (as have others, like Samm Diep).

Anyway, I'm looking forward upon getting my Russ Espiritu (stuck in Customs I guess..), looking to buy a Gus Szamboti or Original Balabushka:
(which to choose...,-any advice/opinion is welcome- any for sale?.... or a Rambow or BlackBoar..
For now I stick to my GB-6 with the BB shaft (but I switch often).

I've shot with quite a few after market shafts

All Three Predators
Ob1 &2
Tiger x
Meucci Black Dot
Custom Flat Laminate

They are all good shafts, but I really don't care for them....which is why I never bought one (just used diff friends to test)

Have been shooting with a Weinstock Custom for about 5yrs.
Before that I shot with a custom heubler, and a production one.

I still like the way the hueblers play.

But nothing beats my Weinstock shaft for how I play. He uses a modified conical taper, there is not one aftermarket shaft that out preforms it in my opinion (at least the ones I've tried).

There is only one thing that really makes the difference in how well a shaft hits if you ask me.....and thats the TAPER.

I don't like them going back straight for forever, I like to have it straight for maybe the first 8" and then it builds slightly to around 12" and then goes mostly conical untill it gets around 6" from the joint. That last 6" has the taper from the butt carried over into it.

It gives the shaft some good spine, while not building too quickly as to feel fat. I just point the stick to where I want to hit the obj ball and it goes. I don't have to adjust which is why I love it so much....It just shoots straight and true to original aim.

I also keep my ferrules 1/2", and I do not like an Ivory ferrule as it makes the shaft shoot crooked to me, because of all the end mass.

In a way the Weinstock is a Low Deflection Shaft....it just uses the taper, spine, and short ferrule to get the results. As opposed to hollow sections, no ferrules etc...

Don't O.D. on the L.D.

Have you tried the Mcdermott Eye 2 shaft? I got a blank, and fitted to a customers cue. I got to play with it some, and I was very impressed. I like you, have been able to sample most of the LD shafts, and I have not been as excited as I was with this Eye 2 shaft. I didn't think much of it at first. It seemed too light, but it had a lot of play in it. Give one a try if you get a chance.

I've always preferred a thicker shaft (well, since I was a kid) and wonder why none of these hi-end radial type shafts are available in anything more than 12.75mm?

Does anyone know of a similar shaft that can be had with a 13.1mm diameter?

OB-XL 13.25mm
Pred Fat 13.2 mm

Believe me my friend: 12.75mm will satisfy you- 13.00 or 12.75 isn t that much difference :-) And the OB-1 is a really nice shaft ^^
