So tell me something guys..

Earl Strickland vs. Phil Helmuth, cage match, who wins? That wouldn't be very ladylike...
I would rather have the coolest guy than the biggest A-hole on my team anytime, even if he was the best.

Exactly, it doesn't matter if you're winning if you're not enjoying yourself in doing so.

I imagine many people here have won many a game, but shot like crap in doing so. It's an empty feeling for me and i'm sure many others when this happens.

That would be a draw..... Phil would swing his man purse but Earl would have all the protective gear to bolck it....

Would love to see Joe Rogan do a dueling impersonation of those two.....

Wasn't Mosconi a bit of a dolt and a bit pissy?

Wasn't Fats a ton of laughs and shorter on the trophies?

Who's tombstone would you rather be under?

I think it's an individual question dependent on each's personality makeup.

All sports, games and even academia are littered with talented folks that were a-holes. Whether or not Earl is an a-hole wont tarnish his legacy, it will probably add to it. He isn't forgettable as many other greats can be. McEnroe is a perfect example. He has embraced his attitude, like with the National car rental commercials, and just has fun with it. Earl probably won't ever do that, but that is mostly because outside of the world of pool, people don't know who he is, nor Johnny Archer or Efren Reyes or Mika Immonen or any of them.

The only people that remember pool players are pool players, and I don't think Earl is an a-hole, just an outspoken competitive guy.

People remember Fats because he was larger than life and The Wide World of Sports used to cover pool. Also, pool was way more popular back then. In the end, I think Earl will be fine. If it was more important to Earl to be a nice guy than to win a lot of trophies, he would probably be doing that.

Is it more important to be remembered for being a great player.. or is it more important that everyone can say "yeh that guy was cool I enjoyed being around him"

We're currently experiencing this in my opinion with Earl Strickland. His antics have just come to be to much at many times during his matches. For the great player he is.. you ask the large majority and they will say he's an A$$hole.

Kinda hate to say it, but it's true. So tell me, is it more important to have those trophies in the case to you, or is it more important to know there's going to be people at your funeral?

I decided I wanted to make a topic about this when I heard my dad say that being on a team is about winning and I said that it was more important to enjoy yourself and make others enjoy it.

If Earl was the coolest guy in the world. He would still have the trophies.
There's no need to be an asshole.

The thing is, if I'm only worried about after death... then either one doesn't matter. I might as well pick the nice guy option, cuz I'm dead and won't know or care.

But if you're asking would I trade a life as a nice guy and mediocre player for a life as an asshοle champion, that's a much more interesting and difficult question.

As others have pointed out, there's no reason you can't be both nice and a champion.
I don't think I'd trade. On the table is only a fraction of your time. Off the table, being a jerk pays you back with serious negative karma. The rest of your life outside the pool hall is gonna suck and eventually you'll pass your prime... then what can you take from life?

True, but he is a GREAT a$$hole!

After thorough self examination, a$$hole -wise, if I am to be
remembered as a great player I better live until I'm 150 or so. I am much further ahead on the schedule for being remembered as a great a$$hole. Thus I have to be realistic and go for what works. GreatA$$HOLE
I've talked it over with my wife and she and her friends have thought for years that I have a born talent for being a good a$$hole. So I have good basic skills at it and can build from there.

( By the way. in Lizard Acres do you know what a wife does with her a$$hole before she has sex? She drops him off at the pool hall!)

I can see greatness ahead of me. I have been chosen!

I would rather be great. Look at Michael Jordon. His off-the-court life isn't perfect. Tiger Woods? Ali? Mike Tyson? Favre? Namath? All had personality flaws but are remembered as the "greats." Pool is no different.

Two words: Efren Reyes. You can be both a gentlemen and a champion. My guess is when all is said and done Earl will always be known for antics instead of his championships. That, is unfortunate but is of his own doing.

Two more words: Ralf Souquet
