So this happened in league...

This is my first season in this 9 ball league and I joined a team where I knew a couple of the guys. I got off to a really bad start, handicapped at 6 I lost 2 matches badly to low handicaps and had 2 matches where I lost by just a couple balls (it goes by pts here).

So sitting at a record of 0-4 a "teammate" tells me that if I lose by 10 balls or more ill drop to a 5, and I should dump so that I can start winning more points next week. I don't like this idea.

In my match it gets to the other guy needing 1 ball and I need 11, again this mate tells me this is already over, take the dive for the good of the team.

I say no and proceed to make the comeback, 11 straight balls for my first win of the season.

I'm thrilled about the win, and so is my friend but when I see that "teammate" he is furious. I say I'm sorry I won't miss a ball on purpose, my goal is to move up the handicap ladder not drop down for easy pts. He starts yelling at me, looking like he wants to hit me, says I'm arrogant and I've already screwed his team over so much that I should have taken the dive so that I can at least make it up to them. He makes it clear that he would like me off his team, but that's up to the captain, not him.

It bothered me for a while, what he said. Was I being the asshole for refusing to dump my match? I probably came into the league overrated, but I like the challenge... And maybe I'm fine where I am. I had 2 really bad matches and the other 3 were really close! On a good day I can play any 6 in this place even. But I've been struggling with bringing my best game to the league match. I don't think this guy has the right attitude though!

I would have done the same thing as you. I wouldn't worry about the other guy. He is waht is wrong with pool competition today.

Here's what to do. Discuss your "teammate's" inappropriate behavior with your team captain. If he sides with the moron who told you to dump, quit the team and join another. I would NEVER play on any team where I was told I had to miss on purpose "for the benefit of the team"...period. You have integrity...keep it.

find somewhere else to play man, not worth it

Tell the guy he has zero integrity and can kiss your ass.

I will quote this because I can not say it any better!!!!

what he said

I'd keep trying to go up in handicap rating. Keep your morals, and integrity. You'll sleep better at night.

This is one of those philosophical differences that has little to no middle ground. The best way to solve it is to have the like minded people on like minded teams.

Both sides make sense, in their own respective ways, but don't always make sense to the other side. You generally don't get very far here by arguing your view to one from the other side.

I'd keep trying to piss him off until he quits or goes and plays for someone a little more down to his level

Don't take any crap brother, we're right there with you

Lets follow threw to the end of your suggestion. This mate tells him to dump. He's the spokesman for the team? Who's going to get dumped? The OP or the mate?

Correct me if I'm right.

What league are you playing in? Just asking because any league where you know your handicap will drop if you lose by x amount of points is pretty silly and totally subject to manipulation and sandbagging. If it's APA, then your teammate is full of $#%& becuase no one knows exactly how the skill levels are calculated.

I missed the part that said this guy was the spokesman. I would think the captain would have something to say to the jerk, or I'd hope he did. If not, I, personally, would probably finish out the session, if that person is going to continue with the team and his attitude hasn't changed, then it would be time for me to change teams. I think it's an issue the captain needs to be involved in

One more thing not mentioned......report to the league operator. One complaint may not get action but several complaints from several people will!
