So...why spend hundreds on a break cue??

Thanks to booze, this may come across as a dick question. However, I'm genuinely curious for your reasons or rationale on this.

I recently got to compare my $70 break cue with a $400+ Predator break cue and the experience left me wondering WHY??? It did not break better, offer more control or even elicit oohs & ahhs from those near by. So, why would someone toss so much $$$ away in something that's not really going to offer a performance gain...or get you laid?

I can understand overspending for a cue that's special to you or that you designed. Does the same thing apply to break cues, especially production models?

It's fun, in my opinion, to "indulge" in that which entertains you, but I'm also of the opinion that multi-hundred dollar break cues are merely a symptom of silliness, foolishness or even insanity.

Enlighten me if you can...or, insult me if you can do nothing else.

Everyone's selection of what type of cue they use, be it a player or break cue is a personal choice. If you feel your $70 break cue is as good as a $400 BKIII then great. You saved yourself $330 to buy more alcohol with. Carry on.

I've tried every break cue out there and my break still sucks... I guess I haven't found the right cue yet.

Well Mine Works Fantastically for Me :D I consistently make at least 1 ball on the Break, I consistently am able to control the Cue Ball on the Break and leave it in the Middle of the Table. If I try to Break with a House Cue, or any other for that matter all of that goes out the window.

So with that being said the only way you'll get my BK2 is to replace it with a BK3.

Thanks to booze, part of me is being a dick to ask this. ...

How does other people's spending habit impact your life? Why does it matter to you what they do with their money?

I ask this as you've clear made your assessment and publicly announced your subjectively negative opinion/judgment on the subject.

Because it's easiest to buy a Break cue, than put hundred hours in practicing your break.

Typically the more you practice your break (the right way), the better your break will get. And the better position you will be in to recognize what makes a great break cue great, and benefit from the difference. As a previous poster said, if you can't tell the difference, don't bother spending the money.

A lot of what goes on in this, or any, public forum doesn't really impact our lives in a meaningful way...but we're still here. Why? Because it's fun/interesting to find things out. To find out why things happen the way they do, why people think or behave the way they do and to, possibly, glean some mind-changing information.

I have personally experienced zero benefit from a much costlier piece of equipment and have opined that I think it's silly and foolish to throw money into something that realistically offers returns that don't equal the expense. It is my right to offer opinions in a public forum, just as it's your right to respond to them. It's also my right to wonder why people don't see things the way I do do and to ask, as I have done, why? It's your right to respond to that, as well. It could be hoped, however, that you'd have more to offer that a defensive "Because I want to...what does it matter to you??"

To be honest, I have a $600+ break/jump cue and I've never sunk the 8 ball on the break. My buddy who is a 3, arguably a 2 as we shoot in the UPA, breaks with a house cue & just tonight made his 2nd 8 ball on the break in the past 5 months. He has lost like 50% of his eyesight and definitely cannot see straight anymore as I watch every shot he shoots. It's luck because I know he doesn't strike the ball in the same spot ever.

Does this make me want to grab a house cue to break with, not a chance. Even though I'm not snapping in 8's, I know my break leaves me a better chance of winning each rack.

Because I like nice things and I've never found a break cue that I like using more than my Gilbert.

I can break just about as well with a good house cue, don't like the feel of using one but it works pretty well. Still love my Gilbert and am happy that I bought it.

If a particular cue gives you confidence then it's worth what you pay for it.

400 isn't much if you are consistent with your break, especially playing 9 ball.

I break with a cheap j&j because I like it, others like something different and it is their money. A beat up escort will get you from point a to b, but a nice car is more comfortable and fun. Both do the same job.

My break cue costs the same as my playing cue.
I only use one cue for both.
I play with a Tiger Jump Break tip.

I definitely noticed a difference between my old 100$ J&J and my new Predator BKII. By all means, the J&J was a great break cue, but it seems the BKII has better balance and a better pivot point.

I guess seeing a difference depends on how you break.

I don't think I could every pay full price for one but I have used a Mezz power break and the shorter length, balance, and control of that cue is unmatched. I have used break cues from 5 production makers and 2 customs, none compare.

I agree with what someone else said that you have to be ale to know the difference in order to see the difference, or something like that.

Now while I totally agree with how can someone spend the money on a none custom break cue I must say I see the difference in using a "LD break cue/shaft". I started using my that has a predator shaft on it as a break (instead of my break) and my break is much much better. Having the stroke or ability to deliver the stroke and the equipment to deliver it is where i'm sold.
Will I spend the money on a "predator" break cue, no and not a chance because i see it the same as buying an apple laptop, bang for buck I don't think it worth it however if it is found for cheaper (meaning a price that corresponds with the buck part) then yes i'll get one.

I would spend more on a break cue, because I care too much about what others think of me, and I don't want anyone to think all I can afford is a $70 cue
