Pool team still robust sans Django
By Ronnie Nathanielsz

ERNESTO Fajardo, the president of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines, expressed confidence that despite the absence of pool legend Francisco “Django” Bustamante, the Philippines has a team that’s good enough to win gold medals in the forthcoming Southeast Asian Games in Manila.

Fajardo said it was very sad that Bustamante was forced to pull out from the SEA Games because of a problem with a painful elbow, which had recently forced him to withdraw in the middle of a game in the US and which also hampered him in the US Open 9-Ball Championships where he finished third.

Bustamante is expected to seek the advice of well-known sports medicine doctor Tyrone Reyes or have it treated in Germany, where European champion Oliver Ortmann had a similar painful elbow, cured.

Fajardo was also concerned that veteran Efren “Bata” Reyes may also be forced to pull out because of poor eyesight.

“We are hoping Efren could make it because we will want him around,” Fajardo said.

However, Fajardo said he realized that Reyes was having problems with his sight for some time now and this had affected his game.
The acknowledged godfather of Philippine pool Aristeo “Putch” Puyat said he would personally accompany Reyes to have his eyes checked and attended to by renowned eye specialist Dr. Arnold Salud, son of former PBA commissioner Rudy Salud on Saturday after which a final decision will be made on whether The Magician would play in the SEA Games.

Fajardo said he was also trying to confirm the participation of US Open champion Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan, who had earlier committed to represent the Philippines in the SEA Games.

Wait...are we all convinced this is just a front so that both can play in IPT's King of the Hill, or are these reports really genuine? I think they're true to some degree that they do have physical problems, but I think they're just giving an excuse so they can bail out from the SEA games and play in the IPT. If that's the case, i'm very disappointed at the way it's being handled. I'd rather they just be upfront and say, "Both are ditching the SEA games because they would rather play for money." I don't think too many people would blame them for that. Now they just look like a bunch of children playing hookie.

i agree with your ssesment and that is dangerous news for the other ipt players
He told Time Asia that his eyes aren’t what they used to be and his knees and elbows also hurt. However, a week after the article came out, he won $160,000 by topping the Tokyo Open.

Defending Champion Efren Reyes is one of the 20 players to attend this upcoming event, beginning of next month:

8-ball certainly is rising in popularity here in the States. Allen Hopkins had announced pre-IPT Tour that there will be a Super Billiards Expo in August of 2006, 8-ball on the bar box, $25,000 GUARANTEED first-place prize monies. With all of the hoopla with 8-ball these days, this is one I'm looking forward to. Plus, it's only a 2-1/2-hour drive for me! :p

This 8-ball event in United Arab Emirates is a $110,000 total purse, featuring 20 of today's top players, including Thorsten Hohmann. :)
