Some Of the Worst Advice Given On AZB

What was some of the worst advice given on AZB that you read over the years? Don't be shy, anything goes...even aiming.

To me it's the ones telling you how to shoot a shot, sell some aiming system, W/O admitting you need a repeatable straight level stroke. When you point that out, they go all crickets on you.

Another is cleaning pool balls. Don't use anything harsh on them, you will wear them down. Pool balls don't need to have a plus or minus of half a thousand like parts for a spacecraft...they're pool balls for God sake. Buy another set once in awhile. Johnnyt

There was this guy who said to out folks for giving out the worst advice.....would you believe that?

The worst advice ever given on the forum was. "Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see."
Or, was it the best advise? I'm never quite sure.

I get it, but I'm NOT asking anyone to OUT anyone. Just to say what the advice was. What's wrong, afraid some silly advice you gave will get outed? Johnnyt

I think there have been a lot of dubious tidbits thrown out over the years, and I think most of the time it's because a myth just gets repeated and repeated and people have a hard time accepting new ways of thinking.

For me I think it's when anyone is asking for advice on how to get better, and someone tells them they just need to randomly hit balls. While it might be true if you don't care how long your learning curve is I don't think it's good advice to most players. I think if you want to really get better you have to have some kind of real approach to meeting that goal that includes a mix of dedicated practice, grooving a good stroke, playing competitively against better players etc.

This one was pretty bad:

I've posted this technique before and it helps, I think, to play better than when practicing:

When I practice 8-ball and miss, I do not take my "opponent's" shots afterwards. I instead pretend I'm at league and I walk back towards my seat and pretend my teammates are giving me crap about my miss, etc. I stand there as I would in league, feel the pain of missing and losing, and pretend that my opponent is running out on me. I "watch" him do that in my mind and take the time to allow him to run out the table. I then rack the balls, as I've lost the game.

This seems to imitate competitive play somewhat and, if not overused, keeps me more focused on winning the game and not so much on consciously going through my fundamentals.

fwiw,

Good post and what I was looking for. Johnnyt

"you must gamble to get better" is hands down, the silliest advice ever.

Granted, it might help shortstop speed players improve their nerves and such. Basically, the ability to play under pressure.

But for the rest of the world, it won't help at all. An APA 4 with a bad stroke, poor mechanics, poor PSR, and inconsistent strategy is NEVER going to suddenly improve all those flaws by playing races to 5 for $20 over a few weeks or even a few months or even a year.

Fix /improve that repeatable straight stroke before you ever gamble one thin dime ;)

Just go ahead and replace your Monarch Super Speeds with a K55 and no rail mods on your GC1, they are close enough.
I did not actually do this as suggested but rather I researched it then had my rails modified for current cushion profiles.

Absolutely not, I don't advise on something I don't personally know about and can explain in detail

there's plenty, but usually the worst "advice" is the retarded explanations on what a particular product can do to help your game. or the product itself. the kamui chalk and tip, the tip glazes over and the chalk is basically a sticky crayon to ruin balls and cloth with. buy a fairly priced tip, elkmaster is a good example, cost like 25cents a tip, and maintain it with a tip pick and a shaper. replace it when it gets low, a tip doesnt have to last a year, its leather, it dries out and you're constantly abusuing it. The aiming machines, which basically says to you, if you need this, you're never gonna be good. the sticks with the levels and lasers and all that nonesense. shoot a shot the same way until you get the result you are looking for. The one thousand dollar plus cue that plays better. it doesn't, I'll use the old cliche of billiards, its the indian not the arrow. buy a nice custom because it will last longer bc its better built, or bc u like the design, and you learn the cues reaction to hitting balls if you use it long enough. A good player can shoot with anything. what about sysytems that will make you better, the game requires ten different sysytems for ten different shots, you use which one suits you best. that one is hard to argue agaginst really, bc any advice on how to improve you're techinque is good advice if it works for you. for the most part when asked for advice on shots or anything related pool, whether you deem it silly or good, most people are trying to help, so its up to you to take the advice or don't.

The worst advice I have been given is: "Everyone who can play decent owns a pair of those Nike Air Max shoes! If you get a pair of those shoes you will play better pool and last longer!" (I've lost 4 tournaments in a row since getting those damned shoes.)

Oh yeah, one more....

If you need to calm down and play better, take a shot of Wild Turkey and don't sip it, chug it. I even tried that, played even worse. :(
