Some Road Players are Ridiculous...

I don't enjoy playing on anything smaller than a 9footer. The only time I play on barboxes is for our weekly BCA league on Thursdays. There is this road player that stops in, maybe once a month at most. He sits at the bar, has a few beers, gets to talkin with other regulars, and after acting really friendly, sometimes he makes cheap money games with them. He usually walks out with $20 or $50 when he's finished, just milkin the joint. The first experience I had with him was when I was practicing on a tricked-up 9footer, the tightest table in the room (quite possibly that I've ever played on???). Anyways, I was practicing shooting long shots with the cueball frozen to the rail and getting position in a few different areas. Normally these shots are real tough, but that day I was making the shots probably 7 out of 10 times on average.

So the road player, who is sitting at the bar watching me (I haven't even noticed him yet), taps me on the shoulder and asks me if I'd like to play some 8-ball on the barbox, for 5$ or 10$ per game. I told him that I liked big tables, and he put on this act saying that after watching me play, he was "intimidated" (lol bullshit, this guy plays like a champion, no lie). So I said what the hell and we played some either $5 or $10 per game 8-ball on a 7ft valley. He soft breaks, I try to safe him, he smashes the stack open, and runs out. Soft breaks again, we trade safeties until he plays this incredible safety I didn't even know existed, and he locked me up. All my 7 balls were on the table at this time. I go for the only kick route and foul, he plays an incredible position shot, brushes a cluster, and gets out perfectly.

Now by this time, I understand that I am way outclassed with this guy. However at the time, the way I was feeling about my 9ball game on a barbox, I actually offered to play him 9ball on either a big or small table, which he declined (he didn't want to show off his speed is my guess). So after I take a few more whoopings, I quit. Out of 8 games played total, I won 1 single game, and it was not even due to an error on his behalf. He soft broke a little too hard, I slammed a shot and got lucky to bust the table wide open and got out.

Anyways, let me just say, that I know for a fact this guy is a hustler. I have watched him play other people one pocket, and let me say that this guy is at least a super-super-super shortstop, or he is right around the pro level. His game is just tremoundous. But after he beats people and walks away with their money, everyone is smiling. He is as friendly as can be, and the last game I played him, I accidentally was short a few bucks, and he said no problem, and bought me something to drink.

I know that he is on the hustle, he's out to make money. But what an incredible hustler you are, when you leave a poolhall with everyone's money, and everyone's smiling about it. I love pool :D

sounds more like a guy paying for his habits

This sounds more like a guy letting others pay for his night out. He isn't really trying for a big score or every penny somebody has. I suppose that hustlers do come in all sizes but the people I call hustlers aren't happy unless they make a big score or bust you for the last dollar in your pocket. This guy is showing a fair amount of speed for five or ten dollars, something a real hustler would never do.

I played a little cheap one pocket with a guy while his riding buddy got into a hundred a game action on the next table. I would never make the mistake of thinking I saw his best game. Maybe the guy I played really is a banger just riding with the other man. Maybe he is the backer, and maybe he is a full grown bear himself when the action gets right.

I do admire the folks that score nicely and leave everybody smiling and glad to see them next time.

Business is business, and his actions are just that. He's in business to win, not make enemies and it's the norm with all successful businesses, just because he doesn't have a front door and a sign out front its all the same.
In the real business world , would you go to a place that you liked the products or the food yet were insulted during your stay, all it is is COMMON SENSE. He bought you the drink because its GOOD BUSINESS nothing more, he like yoooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuur $$$$$$$$ that gets his attention.
