I just watched a 10 ball match between Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland where the referee racked the balls with his hands and no rack. (Archer 8--Strickland 3) What is the reason behind that? Damn, it's tough being stuck in the past.

Was there ever a rack used? If not, then the table was most likely tapped, or they used little placeholders for the balls (like the paper hole punch protectors "donuts" sometimes called). I can't remember the name of the template product that is sometimes used for this.
 
It could have been a magic rack, or a slug doctor.

My bet it was magic rack.

There was some little black, odd shaped template tpe of object on the table under the balls. Does this rack them up tight? I never saw either player check the rack.

Magic rack. Definetely, if its a template.
 
Magic Rack

They use them quite a bit now in quite a few tournaments.

They used Magic Rack's at the US Bar Table Championships in Reno this month and in 9 ball you make the wing ball almost every time with a much softer break than the old days.

Good thing they play alternate breaks or some players would run out the sets.
 
I was blown away by the idea when I first saw one. The idea was so simple I couldn't believe that no none had thought of it before. :)
