Berts last name is not mentioned in the Hustler. Gordon is the name of the big guy that stands beside Bert when he is talking to Eddie when he goes back to Benningtons. Berts last name is Gordon in TCOM when Eddie is talking to Fats in the beginning of the book.

Also Eddie runs a poolhall but has no clue that 8 ball and 9 ball are the games that they play in tournaments today?

For inquiring minds...

I could have swore that in the movie "The Hustler" Eddie looks at Bert finally, and says, "Mister..."

Bert introduces himself by saying, "The name's Gordon, Bert Gordon."

To which Eddie replies..."Mister. You've been sittin' there for hours..."

Am I wrong, or are you talking about the book?

Debra Li....what happened to your picture??? Your new icon just doesn't do you the same justice.

I think we should request that the board admin make answering a trivia question about "The Hustler" part of the new user sign-up procedure in order to maintain a the correct class of posters. :-)

I'll bite, give me a question. I've seen that movie somewhere between 200-300 times I'd guess. Quiet, like a church. yea, chuch of the good hustler.

Fact or Fiction:

1. Ames Billiards was an old poolroom in Times Square, New York City
2. JTS Brown is currently sold in most liquor stores
3. The Bus Depot (Port Authority Bus Terminal) is around the corner from Ames Billiards
4. Most of the poolroom scenes were filmed in a Hollywood studio.
5. Ames didn't have alcohol because until the 1990's it was illegal for a poolroom to sell alcohol in New York City
6. Ames was a second-floor poolroom because no poolroom is allowed to be at street level in New York City above 34th Street
7. Trying to get a game, Eddie offers to play someone left-handed
8. Trying to get a game, Eddie offers to play someone one-handed
9. Charlie gets half
10. The fellow Bert "bears a striking resemblance to" is the Devil

Although I own the movie on DVD, I haven't seen it in some time. I seem to remember the tag changes, it's not always TK6. I seem to remember it being TK5 in one shot, then TK6 in the next. I'll have to break it out and check on that....

Not sure on the others, but on this one, it was against the Alcohol and Beverage Commission rules for any establishment in NY (not just NYC) to have more than 2 pool tables and have a liquor license. This was changed sometime in the late 90's, not sure of the exact year probably '99... So, I'd have to say fact

JTS is still made by heaven hill I believe, nasty bourbon though. Not carried around where I live, but can be ordered. It is cheap though, and not worth the effort

My comments are from the book. I know that he intros himself as bert gordon in the movie but he never mentions his last name in the book. Gordon is a guy that stands beside Bert when he tells him that they will break his thumbs.. and his arms in 2 or 3 places if he doesn't pay up. I was surprised that Walter T. used a reference from the movie as fact in TCOM.

In the book Benningtons is the name of the pool hall not Ames.

They completey rewrote the sections on Sarah in the movie. It was a little surprising. I still rate it as one of the better books I have read.

My bad :D From the movie what is the guys name who breaks Eddies thumbs?

What other famous actor was nearly cast as Fast Eddie? and Why?

In TCOM what legendary pool player walks by right before Grady Seasons is spotted for the first time?....

Who was Fast Eddie supposed to be based on?

What famous rocker appeared in TCOM?

You guys are great. Quick notes, it is true, above 34th street, you are not allowed to have a poolroom at street level. Sara lived there for 3 years as she mentions when she's gushing about how happy she is to Eddie. Oh, and Charlie gets 25%.

I actually live in the area Ames used to be though I haven't actually done the research to find out exactly which building it was in and whether the building is even still there. Port Authority Bus Terminal has had a complete make-over since the 60's and although the neighborhood looks much like what you see out of Sara's window, I can't quite make-out what street she lives on.

When the weather is better, I'll do some serious dog-walking and find out both.

Tcom

I know that one -- Turk. or something real close. GOing to watch TCOM now to find the others. Can't off hand think of the rocker. Famous or Semi-famous?

Rocker - Iggy Pop

I always imagined the license plate symbolized something about Eddie's persona.

When someone says "take five" (as in a break), Eddie, takes 6.

Eddie is always one up, or one step ahead.
