Something new and very cool!

Can it be used to "seat" the chalk on the tip?

[...]
But that's not what I wanted to share with you. John showed me this new product from Kamui called the Gator Grip. It's a very cool, super slim little box that is held together with magnets. Think credit card holder size. You slide the two pieces apart and voila there it is, the Gator Grip. What it is, is just about the coolest tip tool of all time! A flat surface of maybe a thousand or so little points made of carbon steel. Like a Tip Pik, but in a vastly improved version. Larger, easier to use and a very effective tool. Best of all, IT WORKS! Rub your tip across it and just like that, you've roughed it up perfectly. Fast, efficient and once again, EFFECTIVE!

I like this tool and no one is paying me to say this. I did get a free dinner at George's Greek Cafe in Long Beach and that's about it. :)
I wouldn't tell you about this new tip tool if I didn't really like it so much. I am a big fan of Willard's tip tool, but this may be even better. The points are finer and I love the way it roughs your tip so perfectly to take the chalk. You just have to see it and try it for yourself. I see so many new products in pool, it's not often I see something worth raving about. Well I just did.

Jay:

The way you describe this tool, it sounds like it can not only scuff/roughen the tip, but perhaps even be used in the "seating the chalk" method of chalk impregnation?

I wonder if there's any pictures of this device anywhere to see if it'd work in this way?

For those wanting a picture.

Sean, it is an excellent tool for doing just this. The chalk will really stay on your tip after using this tool. Less chance of miscues is a big plus!

Scoorge

$30 is a lot for a tip tool. I watched the video of this, and he took a LOT of time to rough up the tip.

Looks like it might be okay (better be for $30), but I stick with my
TipPik shadow (that fits on your keychain).

For Sure!!!

I had dinner with John Bertone and his partners from Japan last week. They are the manufacturers (the Japanese guys) and distributors (John) of Kamui tips. John has done an amazing job of getting Kamui tips on the market and letting the pool world know about them. He is a hard working guy to say the least. And Masato is a very conscientious manufacturer who is earnestly trying to make the best tips possible. Whatever they are doing it seems to be working, as many top players swear by these tips. And Mika seems to have done all right playing with them!

Seems like they are winning a lot of players over. I met the two guys who own the company. Very conscientious guys who want to make the best tips possible.

Put a Kamui Black Laminated Leather Tip Medium

On a G-Core shaft last year and it really impressed me. So I will try this tip tool and see if it works as well. Good move by McDermott IMO.

I switched to a Kamui myself. While I was in Japan I stopped into a pool room to buy a few to bring home. The guy working there showed us that tool, as well as a couple other Kamui products. According to him, Kamui has been making leather goods for some time so, while they may be relatively new to tip-making, they are not new to creating quality leather products. I also feel like they're the best tip that I have played with so far. Also, anyone who has been to Japan can vouch for me on this one, Japanese craftsmanship and attention to detail, as well as their quality assurance, is second to none. I have a lot of confidence in Japanese made products in general.

(Hah! I posted in a "what's the best tip" thread! I feel kind of ashamed.)

gator grip

I've got a gator grip and I like how it works a lot better than a tip pick or one of those other gadgets. I was always dangerous with a tip pick. lol. With the gator grip I can shape my tip or rough it up without going overboard.

How do you always get everything before me Jesse? I'm so jealous! I have to learn how to play one handed behind my back! Then I be cool too.

The Gator Grip looks pretty cool. At least you can hold it in your pocket without it cutting your pockets or your fingers when you pull it out.

Your review was pretty good although I had to go and google my own link. :D

I've always thought the rough, concave surfaces were better for a cue tip than a flat, rough surface like a flat file, primarily because they are curved like the tip but I will have to see the Gator Grip up close and use one to add anything of value.

Jay is spot on, these are great. I use it on my Kamui med and it holds chalk like never before. But the biggest difference it made was on my Mezz PB2 cue. I have the samsara break tip on it...WOW this tip used to be a pain with the tappers, etc I had before, now it is crazy how the chalk layers on it.

Jimmy never passes up a chance to suck up to his inlaws. A good strategy in my mind.:D

Very cool, sounds like you had an awesome time Jay. I am secretly hoping this tip tool will improve my game lol :)
