Southwest Cues

I am curious and have to ask for some feedback from you all, I have been looking at Southwest due to no other reason but the popularity on this site and word of mouth from pool peers. I reached out to have my name put on the waiting list, TEN YEARS? So why is this brand of cue so popular and sought after? Keep in mind, I have never held one or shot with one...

A top notch cue for sure. Public perception that this is the holy grail of cues makes the wait so long.

Plenty of past posts about SW.
The 10 year wait is the result of the following:
a) They play well to extremely well and the build quality is very high and consistent
As the result b) Demand from players around the world is high, some become addicts (owning multiple ones)
As the result c) Prices go up due to demand
As the result d) They become collectibles to some players/collectors
And because e) SW does not take a deposit when you sign up on the wait list and the price they charge for a new cue is typically lower than their resale value (flip)
As the result f) people put themselves on the list just because they can (max 3(?)) an year, so they can collect or flip
Finally g) the wait list grows to now being 10 years

That's the gist of it

southwest

It is a simple answer the best cues for playability IMHO ever made and the way they hold value helps too. You should get one they are great players

They are probably the best cues for playing pool ever made
everything is perfect,including the service

people love them and pay big prices to obtain them now

I will give $500 over retail for almost any new one the day you get it

The people that make them are fun and likable, especially Laurie Franklin
the original owner and widow of Jerry Franklin

As a tribute to these great people every response to your thread has been accurate and positive, and for that I am thankful

In short, buy one if you can afford one and find one for sale

Very true Tommy and Dean,I've been playing with a South West since 1986 and I will always have one! They are the best and the resale value is a bonus, you will never lose money on one.

There are several previous threads about South West cues. I had one for just over 20 years. So I agree with the people who say they are great and worth the money. The design is simple, elegant, and timeless. They play great. The other thing about ordering a cue from South West is that in 10-11 years, you will actually get a cue.

Having owned over 20 I love them....yet, for my game, I cannot get used to the shaft taper, particularly from their standard taper. Although great cues and very well made, they are not for everybody. I've handed the same SW to various people to "judge" the hit, and opinions have ranged from the best hitting cue they ever tried to I can't make a single ball with this thing.

Generally you are safe buying one and can get your money back fairly easily if you decide to sell. However, I would not buy one without being able to hit with it to see if I liked.

just goes to show you
the best playing cue is not always the one with the reputation;)
just sayin

SW taper

I prefer stiff shafts, so I like their standard taper. But South West will cut a different taper for you if you request it. Mine was a 13.25 mm long pro taper, also not everybody's cup of tea. I haven't seen many SWs with their standard taper. I also know a couple of people who use Predator shafts on their SW. Like any cue, you need to know what you want.

Both shafts and the butt remained straight for the 20 years I owned them.

South West

" South West = The Best" once you play with one, you will never go back!

I have owned one Southwest over the years and it played OK but I can't say it was the best playing cue I have had. I bought the cue off of AZ and it was a nice cue but I ended up trading it. Do not get this wrong I appricate a Southwest and I am a fan of the history and the cue. I am actually on November of 2002's list and not to far away from beginning the build process of the cue. I think they are well made they have no metal rings which can swell up as the wood shrinks if it does, they are wood cues other than the pin and though simple in appearence they didn't get the reputation they do have by being inferior. they have a following and with reason, and as mentioned earlier probably as sure of an investment in a cue as you can get.
