SouthWest Cues

I like SouthWest cues. SouthWest makes a fine playing cue.
I hate their take-it-or-leave customer service. I was told ten years ago that I could place my order and that would lock in the price. Ten years past and the price of the cue went up 300.00. The fact that they sell every cue they produce has given SouthWest the leverage to provide poor customer service to the billiard community. I am just a little unhappy about having to chase my cue order and to compound the matter my design requests were hastily discounted as not aesteticly pleasing. I had asked for Cortland wrap on one of the cues I had ordered and I was told that the assembly guys would choose which color wrap looked the best.
In the end I walked away from my order. Who makes an alternative to SouthWest? Opinions would be apprecaited.

Thanks
I won't get on very long waiting list... no matter who the maker is. There are so many makers of good hitting cues out there that have reasonable wait times. I recently bought a Chudy cue without any wait. He happened to have a cue I wanted that was ready to ship. Just this week I ordered a Scruggs from Mike Cochran. He had several cues nearly completed. The cue I picked only needed to be wrapped. I first called him last Monday, and that cue will be delivered to me Friday. And that's with Wednesday being a holiday! Just call around and the odds are pretty good that you can find something you want without that painfully long wait.

And I'd suggest that you not get hung-up on the cue having to be a SW type cue. They aren't the only cuemaker that makes very good hitting cues.

Hello Musashi, I have been dealing with South West since 1995 and and have never experienced a take it or leave attitude. Laurie and the crew have always been professional and pleasant. Cortland wrap manufacturing ended quite a few years ago.

It is true that the demand for South West cues requires a real long wait, I think about 10 years give or take. They use a pain staking process on how they make their cues and the time in between cuts and the huge amount of orders they have etc. Beacuse the lenght of time it takes to get a cue the cost to South West to produce the cues has risen over the years and they pass a portion of the cost to the buyer which I feel is not out of line. I have also been waitng for cues for years and I accept the price adjustment without question.

South West has their own recognizable, distinctive style that many have tried to copy over the years. But there is only one and true South West.

I'm not sure what you mean by chase your order, but you will not hear from South West until your cue order hits it's turn. When you walked away from your order you walked away from some free money, but that was your decision. I hope all works out for you and you find the right cue for you. You may want to look at Carmelli,Judd,Josey etc.they make some real nice cues. Good Luck on you search.

hey, you think i could maybe walk into it?
in all seriousness, 300 over 10 years doesnt sound bad to me. everything was cheaper 10 years ago but you got paid less. its all relevent.

I understand but...

I understand your frustration but I hope you won't harbor a grudge, Laurie is doing her best to keep things going the way they were when Jerry first started Southwest.

When I placed my order seven years ago, I asked her if I could have the butt made a bit thinner than normal, she said well we have one size. I said OK... can I get a pressed wrap, she said well we do wraps like we always have. I said geez, you guys are like the Soup Nazi (remember this was seven years ago). She didn't know what that Seinfeld character was and I offended her (she's Jewish), so I quickly tried to explain. She said she never had the chance to watch the show but understood what I was getting at. Then she explained to me that she is committed to making the cues as they always have been.

Anyway, I bought a brand new southwest from Joe Martin (who btw is in Denver and is an AZB member) and have been playing with it ever since. I just recently had to send the shafts back for repair and decided to order another shaft just to have a 13mm one if I ever decide to sell the cue.

My advice would be, if you want a southwest, get one on the secondary market (I think you could have made some money if you just followed through on your order, but I understand why you walked away... it just made my order that much closer). If you just want a custom cue that hits well, don't go for a southwest imitation, get a nice custom from one of the multitude of great cue makers out there. Pick up a blue book and figure out what you want.

I think Bluegrass cues are a great choice here. They are plentiful on the used market, hit as good or better than a SW in my opinion, and can be had for around $1000 for a plain cue and $1500 for a six pointer. I agree with Martin that Carmelis are also a great hitting cue at a very reasonable price.

Jeff Olney Cues.

Jeff makes the "Olney" cue I like to play with. :D

True story.

I let a fellow hit with my SW tonight. He took one shot, missed, and said, "What's that got on it? A phenolic tip? I didn't like that hit at all!"

His playing cue was a Meucci. Although he was a decent player.
