speed pool

Go ahead -- bash me

Gotta say that the speed pool players shoot lights out. Luke Salvas is a monster in his own right, and any player who makes it to the top of a speed pool tourney is a fine shooter under any circumstances.

Speed pool is a concept the public can understand. No need to identify the individual balls on the table, as in 9-ball, where in low-def broadcasts the balls can't be recognized. Sorta silly that this one was broadcast in high-def, even though that technology isn't necessary to appreciate speed pool, but it could have helped 9-ball immensely.

The object of speed pool is clearly obvious to a casual viewer. Develop an appreciation for a speed pool player and you might later appreciate the guy who can run a few racks of 9-ball, or whatever.

Speed pool has all the ingredients for good television: Drama that's easily understood, featuring competitors who are interesting to watch (let's hope). Now bring in more of the players' personalities (as poker has done) and let the public get interested in pool.

It's a cycle. The next phase is imminent.

o.k. it's stupid and that's a dumb post. seriously though i'm not trying to bash you but speed pool is ridiculous. it looks assinine with guys running around a table sweating like pigs. it's embarassing. and as for the "casual viewer", i am sick of hearing about the casual viewer. there are no casual pool viewers. and this garbage wouldn't bring them in anyway. once they saw that the rest of pool is nothing like that side show they wouldn't keep watching. i think it's one more thing that hurts our game. but what the hell do i know, i'm the same guy who hates "artistic" pool (call it what it is please it's a fu*kin' trick shot). when i get together with my friends who don't really play and we wind up on a table i can break and run racks and all they say is, "hey can you do that shot the guy did on espn?" and when i say no - they tell me i suck, that what i just did was easy (even though they can't make two in a row). everybody kicks the s*it out of 9ball, but i'd rather watch bad 9ball than the best "speed" or "artistic" pool.

Why don't you tell us what you really think.....

You can easily prove your point by breaking and running 15 balls within 75 seconds. Just in case you'd like to wager on the attempt, I'm game.

no - you missed my point - it's not a good indicator of what pool truly is. it is a farce made for tv gme. way worse than having texas express rules in 9ball. and no i can't run 15 balls in 75 seconds - and i don't want to. that's not playing pool, it's garbage and since you got all ballsy and fancy with your challange - can you do it? i'll say it again, it's stupid. on my best day i am about a b player on average i'm about a c, and i'd rather be a d player who takes pleasure in playing actual billiard games as opposed to a a guy who runs around a table looking like a jackass. and if you really want to wager what speed do you shoot? i have a few respectable players here in GA. that could vouch for my speed as a c player, not tryin to rip any one off. as far as cash goes i don't have alot. i work a modest job and live small time, if i gamble i usually only play 10 to 40 dollar sets. but for you, for the right game i'd empty my pockets any day you felt playing. make a fair game and we could play some 9ball or 10ball. i don't shoot much one pocket or straight pool but with the right weight i'll also play those.

it's fu*kin' garbage

I fully respect your opinion on the matter, and don't like when folks retort with the "can you do it" response.

Having said that. The guy that won this event 2 years in a row (but did not this year) lives nearby, and I consider him a buddy. While you may not like the format of play, or the entire concept of it, it's hard to fault the players (not saying you were) that are good at it (it's a VERY big payday to win).

If ESPN thinks it will draw more viewers than a regular tournament style match then they'll air it. And as long as they keep putting up the money and staging this event, I'll watch it. I mean, if it's a way for players to make money, good enough for me. I'm surprised some of the quicker shooting pros (like a Scott Frost, for example) wouldn't train a bit and try a shot at this event....$50K isn't anything to sneeze at. Just my thoughts.

Ahhh, so this is what you really think......

I'm not sure about the actual speed of most of the players that you see on ESPN participating in the speed pool competition, but i would venture that Luke Salvas could probably give either of them the 7 and can hold his own with a lot of the top pros.

I'm a speed pool contender!!!!!!

I just ran 4 racks of 15 in 63.1111111 seconds.

To do this, I woke up at 4:00 am and drank a dozen raw eggs really fast. I then ran 2.2 miles in 3.45 minutes. When I got home I took a shower and redressed in 1.32 minutes and then shot the hell out of the balls.

The odd thing is, I don't feel like I accomplished anything worthwhile :(

You'd rather watch 9-ball, huh? 9-ball is BORING!!! Everyone and their mother has figured out how to make the wingball every time then run out. I'll take artistic pool, speed pool, 10-ball, 8-ball, 14.1, one pocket, anything but more effin 9-ball.

You dont get it,its the casual player that will watch this and thats good for the sport.Like they say, any publicity even bad is really good.

I think he gets it, but c'mon. Now you got a bunch of idiots with psuedospears running around tables as fast as they can trying to spear balls. I'd rather they move slowly so I can duck ;)

i would not insult the players - read my posts and you'll see i lay blame with espn and tv in general. it's the dumbing down of pool. i'm sorry. i bet your friend who plays well at this plays pool well in general. and i'd rather be watching him play a regular game.
