Sponsers

Reading some of the other threads got me thinking. Has anyone here ever had contact with sponsors? And if so, what were some of the reasons for turning pool down? It seems to me that if we want sponsors for tournaments, and aren't getting them, we need to know why so maybe then something can get changed to attract them. We can speculate all we want to on here, but it doesn't mean anything. We need to find out what the corporations are looking for to promote pool.

i think what pool is lacking is viewership. without this there is noone to really aim marketing at for comercials and stuff which is what returns money back to the corporations in return for thier sponsorship. so what really needs to be addressed is marketing pool to the masses, which would increase tv time, which would in turn increase comercial time, which would then increase event sponsorship.

personally i think the first place to start would be the dress code. making players wear suites and ties thankfully has drecreased but still with the slacks and collard shirts plays them out to be stuffy in appearance which the avg joe cann't relate to. let em wear shorts and t-shirts i say, least the avg joe watching on tv can relate.

second, speed it up. i think the texas hold em tourny had the right idea with eleminating safety play to generate a more action game.

but thats just my opinion, let the flaming comence :D

Many years ago, Budweiser expressed an interest in sponsoring pool in a big way.

Instead of the pool authority figures WORKING TOGETHER, their greediness got in the way. Thus, the Budweiser people withdrew their interest and didn't want to fool with it.

True story. I've got references. :p

Budweiser was one of the sponsors of the poker pool tourney held last year - here in Phoenix. Here is their Web-site They have a section where it lists their sponsors. They had qualifier tournaments ($20 entry each time) the few months before the tourney and if you finished first or second in a qualifier then you were in the tourney. Once you qualified you couldn't play any more qualifiers. The field was set at 64 and was a great time. Lori Jon Jones was there andwas very sweet. They gave away a very nice Olhausen pool table with Budweiser on the side of it some pool cues and lots of other prizes.

That is GREAT to read! :)

Camel cigarettes sponsored the Virginia State 9-Ball Championship a couple of years ago, which was also GREAT.

Budweiser at one time was going to invest monies into a national pool tour, but when the powers-that-be in the pool world entered into negotiations, they withdrew interest in sponsoring a NATIONAL tour.

Well Budweiser is no long sponsoring the Busch series in NASCAR as of next year so that frees up about 35 million a year for advertising. Maybe it is time to hit em up again. Who knows. :)

Our local Budweiser distributor sponsors all of the larger events we do here at Strokerz. They regularly give me between $100-$500 for added money for our events. They have been very helpfull on the local leval for us and never have turned us down once. But we do sell a lot of their beer.:D

I had forgotten about the Hilton sponsorship in pool several years ago. They did, in fact, have a fully laid out tour package in the works, but after two events -- one in Florida and one in Pittsburgh -- Hilton withdrew their sponsorship, and the tour never got off the ground.

There was a multitude of reasons for this happening. One is that it was not planned ahead of time enough to work out the kinks. For instance, the tournament in Pittsburgh occurred at the same exact time as four other tournaments, preventing some pool players from making it there. Also, the attendance by spectators in Pittsburgh was not very good. I think there was a snow storm.

Also, one of the requirements was that each competitor in the Hilton-sponsored tournament must lodge at the Hilton hotel; thus, pay for a room. Pool players are notorious for staying at cheaper sites nearby the pool venue sites, as well as three, four, and sometimes five players sharing one hotel room to save on costs. This didn't fly very well with the Hilton sponsorship folks.
