Spot rule question

I'm sure this has come up before but I never read those threads.:embarrassed2:

Last night I was giving a guy the 7 ball, wild. I was running out and made the 6 and 7 at the same time, but then scratched. He said that only the 7 should come up and he gets ball in hand. I said no it stays down and he gets ball in hand.

We asked some other players and the responses were mixed, one was certain that the 7 came up, three said it stayed down and one person that we called on the phone to straighten it out (I said I'd go by whatever he said since he was good friends with my opponent but trustworthy) said that we should have worked that out ahead of time.

Can someone straighten this out for me? I can't believe I've never run into this before. Thanks in advance.

Oh and if you care, he won that set and we ended up breaking even for the night after about six hours.

There is no such game as 9 ball spotting the wild 7. All these incarnations of 9 ball are player created. All the answers will vary by how individuals play these made up versions of 9 ball.

IMO, as your friend said, you should have discussed this in the beginning.

IMO....if you make his money ball and foul, that ball spots and he gets b.i.h. The only balls that spot in 9 ball are money balls, so the six stays down.

These are just my opinion based on my gambling experiences.

Dude, of course his "spot" ball spots up. Otherwise, when I give someone a ball like the six, I'll just break and shoot his six in and then give him the whole rack with ball in hand. "I can get out a rack with ball in hand," you say? Then you shouldn't be getting the six. Unless you're really playing a champion. If you're playing a champion with the six, we shouldn't even be having this discussion.

Very well said.. I like your way of thinking!

Yeah, he made that arguement and it made me think about it for sure. Well if that's the concensus, I will apologize to him the next time I see him.

He had ball in hand with 8 and the 9 left on the table! Isn't that good enough? We can both run out.

I'm gonna bust him next time.

i dont know if this helps clarify, but first, crawfish brings up a good point, but what used to come up more often (for me) was when a guy is getting a spot, and you shoot his money ball in on the push shot...... should it come up?? yes of course it should. and i think you can kind of conclude from that that money balls should come up when the player giving them "fouls" them in too........

the only thing i can think of to counter this argument would be i would think in certain instances it should be up to the player if he wants to spot his ball(s) or not (like in football). for example, guy is getting the one and 2 balls, i make them on the break but foul...... should they both spot and scre him??? i dont think a handicap should ever punish the player, so i may say he can spot one, two or neither if he likes, although this is not in any rulebook anywhere, but that is what is fair.

I've normally seen and played that if you drop the spot ball and foul, it comes back up. If he drops it and fouls, it stays down.

This is the best answer.

I guess I been out of action too long. or i'm getting senile.:(

Thinking about it I cant remember how we handled that, back in the if it goes in it spots days, it spotted.

When Express rules came along, I honestly cant remember how we handled it, but thinking about it.....I think the $$ ball spotted if it was chit in by the guy giving it up on a foul, and the 6 in this case would have stayed in. so the game would be lost by the guy giving up the weight, because the incomming player has BIH on his spotted ball. If the guy getting the spot makes his $$ ball on a foul it stays in and he loses his spot that rack. Thats the best of my recollection.

I may be Old Fashion, but I always played you spot a ball before the money ball, in this case the 6 spots and the 7 ,.....6 ball on the spot and 7 behind, with cue ball in hand to the opponent, with the option to give back the shot to the opossing opponent!..

just the way I play...

Ahh, the good old day's!!

Long before Texas Express (as I remember it) we used to play all balls made, spotted if you scratched on the break,( lowest # first ) and you shot from the kitchen. Later on, that morphed into all balls stayed down except the one before ANY money ball, which in this case would be the six. (his money ball being the seven)
Likewise, if a player made the last ball before the 9, and scratched, it spotted, or if he missed and scratched, and it wound up in the kitchen, it spotted. In either case, you shot from behind the line.
As coin oper.(bar tables) became the norm, it carried over to big table play, that all the balls stayed down on any foul, except obviously a pay ball, but the incoming player still shot from the kitchen.
That was a commonly accepted rule for many years before TE came along. That sure changed everything didn't it.
The jury is still out whether it was for the better, or not. 2 shot foul required more creativity than jumping. IMO

Rule #1....Agree on the rules BEFORE the coin is flipped. Thats something that will avoid all the BS and arguing.

Well, I guess I need to apologize. It must have been a heat of the moment thing... and he was whining about running two balls with ball in hand. Which by the way, he failed to do!

I might see him tonight if I can sweet talk my wife into letting me play (I know how that sounds). With the holidays I've been out more than usual.

Thanks for the help.
