Spray gluing in the feather-strips.

Do mechanics that spray glue in the feather-strips NOT know how to make new ones, or duct tape the old feather-strip to make sure it don't pull out?

Everyone of the Diamond tables that I've either delivered and set up, or that were already in the location and just needed set up and recovered had ALL the feather-strips not only spray glued in place, but were stapled at the ends of the feather-strips as well.

I can not tell you how much this kind of work pisses me off....LOL Either carry extra feather-strips with you, learn how to tape the feather-strips so they'll fit, or pass the work on to someone else because you have NO business recovering pool tables as far as I'm concerned!

It's not hard to make new feather-strips to fit, all you need is a hand block plane, a blank feather-strip larger than what is needed, so you can match it to fit, and do it right. Duct tape is a second best choice, but spray gluing is OUT....you jackoff....in Houston, TX!!!!

Bad mechanics suck!

I totally agree with Glen. If you don't take the little bit of extra time to do it right, you make the next guy that recovers the table suffer by undoing your crap. In doing so, you make yourself look bad and give other mechanics a bad name. TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK! Now that I have seen a table setup the right way, there's no way I'm going to let someone come in to recover my table and cut corners. Here is a link to a pic of a featherstrip after Glen removed the cloth. You can still see the glue/cloth residue that had to be stripped off.

I dont see how some of these guys think! Do they not worry about ever seeing the table again! We always service tables with every intention of
seeing it again. Thank god i have only seen glued in featherstrips once or
twice. Ten piece, stapled up featherstrips pisses everybody off!

I like it when they use 1/2 in staples to hold them in. I did a table last week that the featherstips were screwed and nailed in, however I was able to remove them and re-use the same featherstrips with out having to nail or screw them to make them work. Someone must have done that to them by habit because they fit ok for me using the same type of cloth that the person before me used.

I often wonder the same thing when a local guy here bondos all the screwholes over, WHY?

I know what you mean! we have one large olhausen dealer here and every table they have done they bondo the centers of course, but they bondo the end slate holes. Not the sides, just centers and ends. Every single one! I cant figure this one out!! I h8 bondo over screws!!

I think bondo has it place and in screw holes is not one of them. Olhausen recommends filling the end screw holes. They are in a little farther in then the sides.

ME!

:withstupid: Thanks Pat, Had not heard that one. More suprising is
i have never had one complaint!!

On 3 piece slates, the rails take up the first 3 1/2" inches of the slate to the point of the cushion. Then the balls take up another 1 1/8" to the bottom center of the ball. That means any screw hole that is within the first 4 5/8th's from the outside edge of the slate will not be in the playing surface. Counting the size of the slate screw hole, call it safe within the first 4" inches, and be done with it...LOL

When I think about the guy's work that I've been having to deal with, slivers, broken up feather strips, spray glue, staples shoved up a dark hole come to mind:rotflmao1:

I been installing Olhausen tables for a dealer in Central Jersey for years and didn't know. I was at the Expo last year and Rex from Olhausen said
" you always fill the end holes right?" What else could I say but of course. He then said how many dealers are not filling them and it can be a problem. In all the years I did their tables I never had a complaint either. But if they want them filled...I will be a fill'en!

the guy who did my table made all new feather strips, but he was the best around. he was the real king cobra.

I just did a table a couple of weeks ago and the spray glue was used on the feather strips and they shot 12+ staples into each feather strip to either hold the cloth or fatten up the mahogany feather strip's. Had to use up the last of my feather strips.

Any one have a good source for premade strips? I have several options from before Weststate billiards and mueller any one else have a good source.

I just might make my own again with some help of my old table saw.

Jinxed

I read this thread a few weeks ago and since then 5 out of 6 tables I've done have had the cloth glued to the featherstrips of which about 2 per table were broken. Personally, I'm blaming Glen for my misfortune. Oh yeah, I also recommended my creeper/rolling seat only to have the conversion mechanism break, a wheel fall off and another wheel lose all it's ball bearings. I'm looking for a dead cat to swing around my head at midnight at this point........

Tiddler, you know what that means when you bust the wheel off your creeper? Time to give up some weight! :D

Alright Glen. Like others I am ready to use all the info you give but need more info. I want to re-cover my table for what will be the 4th time (long story).

I need more info on your gluing method, I need details on this "duct taped feather strips" I need more details on proper stretching methods...aka getting the cloth to look like it's been molded around the slates pocket opening.

I will NOT pay some "table mech" that works for the local rec supply store to cover my table when i know I can do it myself.

Where, and when do we get to excess to this info in detail?
