Spraying Auto Clear ???

I have a few friends that work at paint & body shops. I was considering getting one of them to spray a cue or two for me with auto clear and I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to possibly give me the necessary steps/procedures in spraying a cue with auto clear ???

Does the cue need to be sealed before spraying with auto clear ?? If so what kind of sealer ?? How many coats of clear need to be sprayed ?? How long to wait between coats if more than one coat is to be sprayed ?? How long to wait before buffing the cue out ?? I don't even know what kind of prep work to do to the cue before giving it to him to spray.

I'm not necessarily asking for anyone's trade secrets, but if anyone is willing to post their steps & procedures it would be greatly appreciated, as I am completely clueless. I'll also be more than glad to accept any responses by PM if you don't want to make your procedures known to the general public. Again, ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

No takers yet.....

Have gotten a couple of private messages on Facebook. You know who you are. Thank you a million !!!

Most seal with epoxy now.
Seal with epoxy, let dry and get really hard.
Sand/scratch it down.
Clean the heck out of it .

Spray at least three flashed coats on the same day. Your results might vary.
Your flash time varies by finish and weather .

Let it dry for a day to a few days ( not gonna debate how many days is the best ).
Sand and polish.

The process is the easiest part.
The skill and knowledge part takes a long time to attain.
If you cry a dozen times in the process, you got out cheap.

BE SAFE. If you can smell the clear indoors while it's drying, you're DYING.

Awesome. .. thanks Joey. It will be sprayed and dried in a paint booth.

How long should the epoxy dry before it's sprayed ?? A week ??

I got an elcheapo sneaky I got off ebay for $7 bucks. Its made from Raman wood and I dyed it red. It has about 6-7 coats if Ceramathane on it that I put on about 6 months ago. I'm gonna use it as a guinea pig and spray over the Ceramathane. I got less than $9 bucks in it total so I dont care what happens to it.

Depends on the epoxy and if you have a heater box.
If your fingernail can't dent it, time to sand/scratch.
Ceramethane would not be a good base coat for clear coat .
The clear will eat it .

You can start with BSI epoxy coat. Buy the smallest container.

Thank you sir. I use the Max 5 minute epoxy (at least until its gone).
Maybe I wont try spraying over the Ceramathane after all, lol.
I greatly appreciate your input Joey. Thank you very much !!!

I know someone who simply starts spraying clear over bare wood.

Otherwise, any painter at a body shop will know how to prep epoxy for paint.

Furthermore, every paint is different regarding how it is applied.

Hi,

The best thing to do is follow the manufacture's specs for temperature conditions, flash times between coats, and mill thickness of the overall coating. There are different hardeners for specific temperature ranges. Make sure you are in the right range when applying the coating. I use a flow enhancer with my system and the coating is very smooth before sanding process.

Also make sure your air is free of oil, moisture and contaminated by using the proper filter set ups.

If you pay attention to these details. prep the surface properly and allow for proper curing time before sanding and buffing, the actual spraying is the easy part of finishing a cue.

JMO,

Rick

Darren Hill ( Hills Cues ) have an amazing finish, he starts with 2 part epoxy and then preps for auto clear that he does himself. The finish turns out top notch and strong.
