Squirrel at Derby City

Prior to Derby City there was a post about Squirrel playing some one pocket with anyone over 70. There was a response from The Mailman (Gabe from Vegas) who met the criteria and asked to play. I am wondering if they played or anyone else mixed it up with Squirrel. John Henderson

I'd like to see Gabe in action against Squirrel. He learned a lot from Johnny Ervolino over the years. The only player I saw Squirrel play was Harry Platis. They played one ball One Pocket for 500 a game. You start with one ball on the middle diamond of the end rail, and bank for your hole.

I believe Squirrel won about 5K.

Gabe and I played quite a few times over the years. He was playing better than ever a few years ago after he retired when he came to the Hard Times Tournament in Sacramento. I think you were the Tournament Director and I didn't play in this one, just came to watch a few times.

We used to play one ball one pocket at The Palace in Bellflower. Winner breaks (breaking was a disadvantage), and the object ball and the cue ball were froze to the middle of the rail on opposite rails. The object ball was at the same end as your pocket, so it sounds like the game is a little different than Squirrel and Harry played. I used to play it with Butch Van Syoc (sp) who ended up buying the room from Verne Peterson. I can't remember who beat who, but we teed it up quite a few times. I also tried it one handed with Ray Booth from Florida and I do remember the outcome there. No good for Johnny. I tried to get 9 ball players who hated one pocket to play it for years to help them learn some moves, but they hated this game even worse. John

John, you are one shifty insurance salesman. I'm glad I only donated to you once (so far).

I switched from the insurance business to the mortgage business quite a few years ago. Felt like I could be of more assitance to my fellow man in this way. Still do a loan or two once and a while to keep me in horse/pool money and just closed a nice one and am wondering what to do with the $$. T-Rex will probably get his share unless someone else up here steps up with a fair game. I do not remember your donation, but I have never tried to play you banks (and won't) John Henderson

Ray was around Five Points Bowl and the Palace in Bellflower for a while and moved pretty good. I beat him for a small amount playing 9 ball but lost at almost everything else. We played a game of three cushion for a fair bet one time, and after a few shots he was grinning and laughing and I asked him what was going on. He said "Do you think you are the only pool player that knows how to go back to the red ball"? He beat me, and that was when I decided to trap him in a one handed game. Turned out he played that better than me too.

Speaking of all time quotes, here is one from Archie The Greek when someone asked him if he would stake so & so for 5k, and would he be worried about a dump. "If I ever staked a pool player for $5,000, I would be hot if he didn't dump me". John

I played both Squirrel and Gabe.very difficult to predict but I will pick Gabe.
Squirrel still controls the rock very well.His basic technique is pushing and shoving all the balls close to his pocket and leaving the cue on the side of opponent`s pocket.
