..Does anybody happen to know when St Elmos in Norfolk Virginia closed it's doors. Boy that was a classic room and always had a lot of action. That was the 1st time i had ever seen Wimpy Lassiter play. And boy did he play for the cash. Was like watching a machine play.....Never missed...I was in the Navy and stationed there and always went there when i could get ashore.....................mike

Mike:

I hung out there when my ship was in port, from '67 to late '70. USS Biddle, DLG-34.

All the regulars had a nickname, and they called me Sailorboy. I "took lessons" in straight pool from Sam Bass every Saturday. Played about even with an old gent named Red. I asked him why he was playing safe on me once, he said, "Oh no, you shoot too good." Not so good coming back from a six month deployment, though. Took a bit to get back in stroke.

I didn't know who Wimpy was until one them told me I should go ask "that old man" in the chair to play some nine ball. He politely turned me down, then they all stated laughing, so I figured I'd been had. I went back to shake his hand, and he shook with his left hand.

I'd read online somewhere that it was closed in '72 or so.
