Stains and Dyes.

I'm working on a project and need some help finding the right colors and products to achieve a specific color or close to it.

I've looked on stewmac.com for color configurations but am not sure what i need to make the orange color. I already have the ebony base on and sanded down to enhance the figure in the wood. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Red and yellow will make orange.
It appears stewmac has a few colors to start with.

I would think that you get just about any color of orange you needed out of those combinations. Don't forget to measure out your mix and right it down so you can recreate the color later.

There's also a place , reranch.com , that is a supplier for guitar refinishing ... I've bought from them and it's good stuff , water base or alchohol dyes , large color selection ...

Something you may want to thing about is exactly how the color is acheived.

Often (and I certainly did this) a base coat of clear laquer is applied to the figured wood and then tinted laquer is applied over it. The nice thing about this is you can easily strip it off if you need to, and adjust the color through both the color of your tint as well as how many coats of tinted laquer you apply.

If you have a system that you know works (test on scrap from the same board) you can stain the wood, apply clear laquer and then tinted laquer. That's how you get that really deep, prizmatic effect in the finish.

Probably not a good idea for pool cues, but if you stain the wood and it is not right, you are sort of screwed. Since the fiish is the last step on a fairly intricate piece of wood working, it really pays to have a 'safety net' so to speak...

In all cases your final coats are clear laquer which is blocked and buffed.

That is my favorite stain. I often use it to bring out figure in wood and then sand it back off. It took me a long time to discover it and I've never turned anyone else on to it. A friend has an old JW with it and I tried many stain combinations looking for it many years ago. A very warm color.
