Standing on slate bed?

I am going to change the light fixture above my Diamond Pro. The easiest way to do this is stand on the playing surface. I don't think it should hurt it. The previous owner mentioned that he had done it. I will avoid the rails and wood. Any ideas?

painter's ladder

I don't ever stand on the pool table. I use a painter's ladder and it allowed me to get out over the pool table easier!

If you must stand on the table put some solid boards acoss the short way. This will keep you off the slate. Probably not good for the rails though. Johnnyt

If you have good support underneath, it should be no problem. Remember the slate is much heavier than you are. Just don't stand on the rails.

I always took off my shoes when getting on the table to fix the lights etc.

Depending how your table is shimmed, it can easily be stood on.

Remember, slate is used for pool tables because of its compression values. Its weakness, however, is its tension. Bend it and it will snap quite easily.

If its shimmed up correctly or supported fully on the frame, you could have a couple Sumo Wrestlers have it out up there with danger of hurting the slate...

Every halloween and christmas, I climb up on 5-10 tables to decorate above them and on the lights. I never stand on the rails and I don't weigh much. These tables are 40+ years old and it hasn't hurt them a bit. I do the same at my house--brunswick goldcrowns can take it!
And Christmas a year ago I danced on one!

I just stood on my diamond pro yesterday to hang the light. Put down a cover and have a ladder next to the table. I always try to keep one foot on the ladder and one on the table. But if your using the diamond lamp it going to be heavy you may need to get completely on the table. Think of this, the slates are 300lbs each, so your 200lb body is only a small percentage of the weight its already holding.

Thank you for all the responses. I did end up standing on it and it actually seems to roll better now. I used some 3' 2x4's the long way across the seams and a 3'x4' 1" thick piece of plywood over that. I also covered the felt with blankets. It is nice to know that I can work above it if I have to.

Thanks again for the help!

Seems to me that several players have jumped up on the table to celebrate their victories. IIRC Alex and Earl:D
