Hello poolplayerrm,

This is a pretty broad question...but here is how I begin.

Develop or acquire a decent chart of accounts for a pool room. This will give you line items to begin quantifying costs for a P&L statement. An example of these line items might be:
-Income (separate sources such as table time, liuquor sales, vending machines, games, etc)
-Cost of goods sold (separate line items for each income category)
-Rent
-Utilities (separate telephone, water, gas, etc)
-Hired help (labor)
-etc, etc until you have quantified the costs of doing business like you plan.

Then build a beginning balance sheet which will include line items for all assets and liabilities the day before you begin the business.

A business plan is predicting the future...you must project:
-Start up costs (purchases of inventory and equipment, utility deposits, etc.
-Not only sales but the costs involved in making those sales.

Then close each period (generally monthly) to determine P&L and post to the beginning Balance Sheet to update.

Once this is completed, calculate the statement of cash flows.

A narrative generally accompanies the financial statements providing detailed explanation of:
-The progression of the business as shown in the financial statements
-A competition survey
-your experience or why you will succeed.

Hope this helps

And...location location location (both your post and your PHall). Do you think Raleigh can support another Phall?

It is not something ...

That you can learn in 10-15 minutes. A fully
qualified business plan takes a lot of work.
Try contacting the SBA for information about
how to get started. I had several courses about
developing business plans in graduate school
among other things.

I have been in business for myself (not pool) for a tad over 33 years. Have seen a lot of businesses come and go. The number one thing that causes most new business to fail, in my opinion, is starting under capitalized. No matter what you attempt you are going to find that it will take longer and cost more than you anticipated.

I'm not a master in what it takes to run a pool hall, but I know location is very important. I think you can make some money if you get near a nice college where you have a lot of kids who like to play pool. It's a good idea to run a weekly event for the regulars, but cater to the kids most of all. They are your bread and butter. :)

Real good advice. They are the ones that have the most liquid cash and will spend it.I have 3 places " not pool rooms" and I always look for colleges and most important is there a Mickey D'ds around.
They spend a lot of money researching demographics before they open a new store.i hope this helps.

I already did the whole deal only to not find a spot, tables ect 25k took a bath and sold it all for 12k.....If you want PM me I will answer any question you have if I can.....

Best move I ever made was not opening a room started another business that is doing very well

I am opening a bar -pool hall. You better have alot of cash because of the unplanned costs that occur when you are getting it up and running.
