Statistics!!!

maybe statistics is what our sport needs to help it get to another level! Really, if you think about it every major sport that is out there has statistics, and everyone relies on them. Players use them, Coaches use them, Fans use them, Book Makers use them.. some people go nuts over stats, Look at what the Oakland A's did in the early 2000's, they built a pennant winning team based on stats alone.

pool could standardize a set of common stats that professional tournaments could track, manage, update and offer to the public and players. Players would most certainly see areas in which they excelled at and areas in which they need to improve on.

Just food for thought...chime in...what do you think.

Pat Fleming developed a statistical ranking system and a company which he named AccuStats. I'm not sure if Mr. Fleming is still doing the stats thing anymore though. He is still active in video production, streaming, and the like.
Maybe he will read this and chime in.

AccuStats is a great source for tournament vids and more.

BTW I wonder if anyone here has any reliable stats on 8 ball (specifically, win/loss ratios) for the various different league handicap skill levels and handicap structures?

Yes, I have purchased and watch many of Accu-stats videos, I never really learned how his ranking profile worked, and i think some people still use it.

But if you take a look at any major sport, whether its an individual sport, like Tennis, or Golf, or even bowling, you can find hundred of stats..

Golf has.....
Putting Average
Driving Accuracy
Average Drive
Total Cuts Made
One-Putt Percentage - Round 5
Total 1 Putts - 20-25'
Total 1 Putts - > 25'
Total 1 Putts - Inside 5'
One-Putt Percentage - Round 4
Total 1 Putts - 5-10'
One-Putt Percentage
One-Putt Percentage - Round 3
One-Putt Percentage - Round 1
One-Putt Percentage - Round 2
Total 1 Putts - 15-20'
Total 1 Putts - 10-15'

AND THIS IS JUST A SMALL SAMPLING OF GOLF STATS.

He produced a magazine (called "Accu-stats" coincidentally) for about four years in the mid-1980s that covered the statistics of all the major 9-ball tournaments. All those magazines are on-line HERE for anyone who is interested.

Stats?

I agree that it, stats would help, but who would keep them? Is there a Pro tour? Do any of the separate tours even deal with each other?

Statistics presupposes an organization that would collect and archive them.
Pool players don't believe in organization and certainly won't pay money for it.
As for coaches using statistics:
What is a pool coach? :D
Everything a pool player learned, he learned by gambling. :D

If you have ever watched major snooker broadcasts, statistics are kept.
Updates are regularly served up for the TV audience covering such info as:

Average time per shot
Potting success
Safety success
Success with rest shots
Win loss record of the players against each other

Hal is this okay ?

Hal Mix, taught me to use statistics to win games. He had me observe how many balls a guy could run on average. Let’s say statistically he could run 5 balls.

Hal would tell me to let him see 6. I would miss and give him a easy shot on the sixth ball. Sure once in a while he would get out and make all six and win the game. Heck and he might run 9 and out.

But statistics don’t lie.
You are who you are.

I can’t tell you how many games I won only needing to make one to three balls, using this method.

Hal worked with me for months on how many balls I could run.

When I got to 5 statistically, I got a revelation one day.

I was playing a game and was left with 5 balls. I looked at Hal gave a quick smile , and got off my chair like Steve Mizerak used too.
I said to myself, I’m out.

Just something to think about when watching players play.

Hal rest in peace, Barney

Secaucas Fats...I'm not sure how you'd get them now, but the IPT kept a lot of statistics for the tournaments they put on (3 major ones), all of which were 8-ball.
