stealing a ball

I was trying a lot of new and different things yesterday. Changed my stroke, changed my stance, wasn't controlling the cue ball well at all. I had a pair of balls about a foot away from the side pocket and down towards the foot pocket about the same distance. They were close enough together to block a shot on either one and I had missed breaking them apart twice. I was pretty much had with no brilliant ideas to bail me out, maybe a low percentage bank and I was banking poorly on the Gold Crown, probably partially because I almost always play on a Diamond now.

I had looked at the two balls a few times but since I was fixing to go with a maybe ten percent shot at the moment I studied them with a new eye before trying the off angle combination into a bank. Hmm, hit the seven hard so that it skids and cut into the other ball at an angle and it has to take off towards the side pocket a foot away on the tangent line, a seemingly impossible pocket to get to at first glance.

Considering Joe Villalpando's DVD on tangent lines it looks like the seven not only can go, it has to go. Trying my new compact slip stroke I gave the seven a whack! It hit the side pocket harder than I liked but I wanted to make sure it skidded most of the way there. It dropped politely and I had shape on my next ball. I love it when I steal a ball that isn't obvious. Just practicing but this is a shot that comes up often. I'll pay a little more attention to tangent lines in the future.

Well, that has been known to happen but this was a bit too blatant. This was just one of those "whut tha hell?" shots because the object ball came flying back in almost the same direction the cue ball came from. It doesn't seem physically possible at first glance kinda like taking a ball from the pile by pocketing it in the same pocket the cue ball had been in front of.
