Steel Dovetail lathe beds

If I was going to build a 48" lathe using taig parts....what would I mount this bed to? I assume this bed will support all taig parts?

Sorry, I missed your post!

So, these lathe beds are to Taig dimensions, so all headstocks, tailstocks, carriages etc. will fit. As mentioned in the first post, they are ever so slightly narrower than the Taig, but only by a few thousandths. These beds don't have the grooves in the bottom of them to fit the Taig channel, so if you want to mount it like a normal taig, you'll need to either cut the slots or come up with another way to mount it.

I hope that helps!

We do still have some left if anyone is still interested.

I haven't mounted mine yet - off on a business trip (damn day job LOL) but eventually I will mount mine to a length of 8020 1530 (1.5" x 3.0") aluminum. The 8020 stuff is really stiff and straight. The pre-drilled chamfered holes in the bed are just right for a 1/4-20 flat head socket screw into a T-nut in the channel below.

However, if there are other Taig add-ons that you wish to use, like their power feed, you may have to DIY some of the fittings.

It's been a while since I posted so I thought I would bring this thread back to the top.

We've actually sold quite a few of the lathe beds and only have a small number left.

If anyone is interested, please let me know.

Thanks

I mounted my steel bed to 40mm square section ali with a 6mm wall.
That in turn is mounted to a piece of 1x3 8020 , that is on the flat.
1st mounted the 40mm box section to the 8020, using the clamps and screws, I also glued it. Made sure the 2 rails were centered. Then set the steel dovetail to the 40mm box section, setting as straight as possible to the centre line and parallel.Gluing the sections added to the rigidity of the assembly.
Lastly I lapped the bed in and set up the carriage way.
