Steve Davis - Poker

I was channel surfing and came across the final table of the Poker Million -Masters II in England. Lo and behold, Steve Davis is one of the final players.

Odd thing, this tournament. I can't tell if this is a pro tournament or something else. Maybe it's the Euro style, but I'm seeing some oddly played hands, with a ton of physical tells as well as playing tells, almost like it's an online amateur tourney (well, not that bad).

Anyway, so far, Davis hasn't gotten involved in a single hand.

I know Jay Helfert placed relatively high in one of the WSOP events. Josh Arieh is part of the pool world. Tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov has retired and has one the Russian Poker Championship.

Edit: The color commentator (Gary Jones, who did quite well in last year's WSOP Main Event) opines that many of the players who play other individual competitions do well in the transition to poker, that it's the same mindset to do ones best as an individual (as opposed to team sports). He also suggests that players like Davis are so used to being in front of the cameras that he and others like him aren't going to be shell shocked like the internet qualifiers. This suggests to me also that this is indeed an internet tournament (like the recent Ultimatebet.com Championship).

That a seasoned Pool Player, especially one that gambled
a lot, do okay at Poker. The mental portion is similiar in
some respects. I have a good buddy that would spot me
the 8 in Pool, but I would spot him in cards..... lol

Actually, the winner of that event was Jimmy White, one of the most popular professional snooker players. Steve and Jimmy made it into the final against many top poker players. It was certainly good for ratings.

There are many, many people involved in pool who are excellent poker players. Jay Helfert and Tang Ho are solid cash players as well as several other people such as Fred Smith, Jeremy Jones, John Hennigan, etc. And of course Amarillo Slim. Though he seems to be more well known for his poker skills than pool, but he is/was an awesome pool player. It seems like the transition from pool to poker is a lot easier than another sport, say Bowling to poker.

I was watching the WPT last year and one of the players occupation was listed as "former pool hustler from Minneapolis" . I'll be damned if I can remeber his name now. I'd never heard of him and I've been around pool in the midwest for a few years so I asked a few friends in the Twin Cities if they knew him. Turns out he was a 'B' level ball banger who liked a bit of action but not too much. LOL Sometimes all you have to do is mention you play pool and you are a hustler.

Jimmy White won the event one year and was playing in the next years tourney but got knocked out heads up against a pro. I watched it about a month ago I think.

I asked this before but no one responded: Has anyone seen John Hennigen play and can estimate his playing level? He played out of Fuscos' hall in Philly and supposedly couldn't get a game but I would think a ton of pros would take their chances with him.
