Why on earth did he do this? I realize he landed a new job, but we're talking only 5 or 6 tournies a year. And the guaranteed money? Potential of 100k or more ...I don't get it. Especially considering how mch he is dedicated to pool and how talented he is.

I would expect to see a few more drop out after a tournament or two once the reality sets in, especially those with high travel expenses from Europe. Beyond the fantasy camp aspect many will never be in the top 75 and it will become shockingly clear it makes little sense to even spend the travel costs much less all the dedicated practice and maybe taking as much as 6 weeks off from their jobs in a futile attempt to finish in the top 100. This is round robin and it will not take long to see the truth. Steve made the right and responsible choice and I doubt he has had any second thoughts about it.

Steve is exceptionally bright, very well educated and has bright prospects outisde of pool. Why not just respect his decision and wish him well in his pursuits.

If Steve is reading this, then I just wanted to say that I respect his decision, and wish him well in his pursuits.

P.S. - I really think he's just biding his time until SJM and I win the Powerball Jackpot and start our own ISPT (International Straight Pool Tour). It's only a matter of time.

Steve actually addressed this issue in a previous post before it became public and he did this to give another player a chance because of his current situation.

Steve is a class act!!

Barbara

I have known Steve for a few years and can't decide which I respect him more as, a player or a person. I always loved to here about him snapping off World Class Players, and/or his many 14.1 achievements. That is why I was so happy to see his name on the IPT list, hoping to read/hear stories of him gunning down a few champions.

Having said that, though I feel that it is a shame he gave up his card, i respect his decision and wish him the best with whatever he is involved with now.

Good Luck Steve in your endeavors for the New Year!

I have to agree, although this is a great opportunity for pool players to earn a decent living. Its hard to compensate the advantages of a career and all that brings. I wouldn't rule out trying to qualify for the IPT myself in the future but in the short term I and I assume many other can make a lot more money from our repective careers. Its not "living the dream" of course, but the drea only lasts for so long and living out of a backpack is only a "dream" for so long.

I lost to steve in the big apple open, he plays a great game and seems like a nice guy. I'm sure he would have kept his place on the tour and if he wants to he'll prob be able to play on it in the future...or at the least willies and sjms tour ;)

PS
Willie, you don't need to wait for a lottery win with SJM backing you! hehe

How about this...an opportunity to the play the best players in the world and perhaps play on national television. No amount of money from your private job could replace that.

sometimes its not just about the money. sometimes its about family first. im sure he didnt want to give it up but sometimes we cant do what we want for ourselves we have to think of others and think of our future. as stated earlier he posted a response to all this, and to get all insultive toward sjm was really not cool and probably didnt score you any good reputation points.

You may, even if you don't realize it, be talking about yourself. Many people are very successful in their lives and this IPT thing except for the few really top players isn't a big deal. The idea of being a struggling professional pool player is not the most appealing of ideas. At best it offers a small possibility to make what a good percent of the population makes at their jobs anyway without the security and many benefits. And this, if it is a success, is still a few years away. It needs to be put in perspective, only a few on the list will make any money to speak of at all if the thing survives. When all the hype is over and people see it in the proper perspective all they are being offered a very insecure and maybe not very well paying job that they can lose at any time. Not a hard thing to pass on by a person with a good job but may be appealing for many pool bums who don't have a pot to piss in anyway.

Why stop there SJM?

TG,
Though I don't know Steve Lipsky personally; a former #1 in the world has told me he is a gentleman, a good sport, a great player, and an asset to our sport. Steve is also a good friend of many of the players on this forum, and has gone out of his way on several occasions to help me with some of my straight pool problems. What part of SJM's post could you possibly disagree with?

If you have some bone to pick with SL, this is NOT the place. If you are really a true pool fan (and not an obnoxious internet troll), then this would be a great time to show it with an apology for a truly tasteless, pointless, and off-topic remark. We all occasionally mis-step in our quest for comedy.

I dont think an apology can in anyway rectify or soften that totally classless comment. There should be no second chances in this instance. No telling what such a vile individual would post in the future.

ok, im sorry (i couldn't resist SJM, too ez) ----but im curious who this former #1 player you're referring to?
Please don't say Ginky

I got to do that in Korea, I took the best part of a year out and despite winning $8000 I spent 3 times that for the privilege of living one of my dreams. Still the idea of doing it on a more permanent basis doesn't fill me with security long term.

I can just imagine the response of a mortgage application when putting down "professional pool player" in the occupation field (no matter how much I had won that year)!

If you have investments, feel secure, or have no other career then of course go for it!

Maybe i'll tell the group about some of your quirky, strange hobbies/fantasies involving_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _??
I promise, we'll keep it a secret

Wow! What did I miss? It is hard to imagine that my post might have offended you, as it was neither provocotive nor aggressive. I try very hard to be respectful of other posters on this forum, whether they see things my way or not.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "I couldn't resist, too ez" remark, but I'll accept your apology and ask, as a favor, that you address me, and the others on the forum, in a more cordial, dignified and respectful manner from this point forward.

As for those posters that rallied to my side, thank you.

Folks, don't waste your time trying to explain to this troll how he's wrong. If you really want to know what kind of person Tgavin is, check out this thread...
http://www.azbilliards.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=16616

It should tell you all that you need to know. For this thread, he was banned for a whopping week. A nice slap on the wrist for threatening to beat up a woman. I've never complained to Mike about anyone or anything on this forum except for this troll. As you can see, it went no where. Back when this happend, Mike said it shouldn't matter because tgavin told him that he wasn't going to post anymore.... read the thread and tell me if you would've trusted anything this troll said. Because this guy was allowed to stay a member of this forum, we've all been subjected to his crudeness...again.
