Straight Pool Rating System

Is there a rating system based on either your high run, or your average per inning run, or just your last 10 high runs averaged out?

Is there a number that makes you a:

1. Pro
2. Open
3. AAA, AA, A (or A++, A+, A)
4. B's and C's

If a persons high run is over 100 does that automatically put him at "x" level? Or if a person has 10 high runs in the 70's to 90's range what would his rating be?

I dont play 14.1 League so I dont know how players get rated. Not only asking out of curiosity but also if I'm playing someone and I have to get weight or give weight I'd like to know how thats calculated for it to be fair.

Sounds like a question for Walsh...

I've never heard of one, but I don't think high runs should be used for the calculations.

Perhaps you could take 10 high run attempts with a break ball during practice, and calculate your average run.

No idea what averages would equate to what skill level, but I think that would be the most accurate way of calculating.

contact amsterdam billiards NYC. Jude Rosenstock who is a AZB member recently took over managing league. they have over 40 players in their saturday straight pool league. 4 divisions , ratings range from 100 to 550. can go higher. dont know how they determine ratings. i just go and play my match. hey, this is my first post on AZB!

For an explanation of the rating system that is used in several leagues around here, see http://www.sfbilliards.com/articles/2003.pdf -- page 11. This system tells you how many points each player needs from the others to have a fair game. The system includes automatic ratings adjustments based on match wins.

It does not compare ratings very well from group to group although around here the different venues are pretty well lined up because the ratings have been passed around to new venues when they start up. If you have a good way to compare two players from different areas, it will line up the two groups reasonably well.

(Similarly, the notion of an "A" or "B" player varies considerable from area to area, and although some sort of standard descriptions exist, there is no general agreement. See Dr. Dave's website for more info on ratings: http://billiards.colostate.edu/threads/ratings.html )

In particular, see the Fargo system by Mike Page on Dr. Dave's site. It adds in match scores to make the rating adjustments faster.

In theory, Mike's system could be applied to records of past tournaments to determine relative abilities, and he did this for a World Nine Ball Championship (I think) for an article in Billiards Digest.

Hey JBC welcome to the forums!

Amsterdam was my main room but since Danny has been gone I've been going to Eastside or Steinway mostly...also I don't play league (not free every Saturday), but I'm sure if I ask Jude to watch me play with some attempts at a free break shot...seeing how I pocket balls, maneuver the cueball and patterns...he will give me some idea at what my level would be at Amsterdam...but what I'm trying to figure out is if you and I were to play a match, and you dont know how well I play, because there is no rating system...then how would I know if you should be giving me weight or the other way around
