Red Shoes Billiards will be hosting a "Straight Pool" (14.1 continuous pocket billiards) Tournament on Saturday October 27th, 2012. This is a $50 Entry Fee (green fee included), ***$500*** Added Money (based on a full field), Double Elimination (100 point games) Tournament. Sign-up 12:00 PM (noon). For additional info. CONTACT: John Lavin @ Red Shoes Billiards 12009 S. Pulaski Rd. Alsip, Illinois 60803 (tel. 708-388-3700 or website: redshoesbilliards.com).

The tables had new Simonis put on them a few months ago.

John bought new sets of Brunswick Centennial Balls.

The conditions should be excellent for good runs.

One table will be streamed at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/dmgwalsh and several others will be streamed at the channels found for user redsh0es which is probably http://www.ustream.tv/channel/redsh0es.

In addition to the $500 added, Noel Mendoza will be donating one of his fine cues for the prize fund. Check out Noel's cues. Great for three cushion, straight pool, and all pool games. Carrying on the tradition of Ray Schuler with the Schuler joint and fine craftsmanship.

John Lavin is a good friend of mine.

That disclaimer aside, Red Shoes is, without a doubt, one of the premier rooms in America today -- probably top five. And, allowing for the action factor, probably top three.

Having traveled around the country and seen the state of pool nowadays I can tell you that you Chicago boys are lucky indeed to have such a room available to you: a conscientious owner/player; beautifully set up equipment; new balls!!! (that are cleaned constantly); new Simonis; enough action for anyone who wants to strap it on; a great bar and grill; and fanatical attention to cleanliness throughout the room. It is one of the great rooms in the country.

Lou Figueroa
hell, I might head that-a-way
next weekend
just to see it all again

Lou - As one of the lucky Chicago boys, I agree with everything you're saying. Hope you can make it to the tournament.

Even before John spruced the place up, I remember looking around on a Saturday night during a straight pool tournament, seeing Sailor and Freddy and George Fels sitting at a table sweating a game. All the while some very nice John Coltrane music was playing in the background, and the sounds of balls hitting balls and hitting pockets filled the air.

Now we have the grill and bar in the back, new cloth, new balls, rails replaced. During our Wednesday night Straight Pool League, you can glance around and see Tom Karabotsos playing Ike Runnels, Bobby Hunter playing Bob Cozzolino, while Jeff Mohl, Big Sam, and Rich Klein sit in a booth sweating the games or telling tales of players from years ago.

Not a bad way to spend an evening.

Sometimes I think I want to jump on a train to Chicago (because how else should you go to Chicago?) and play in this tournament. Then I think, "but your high run is 25 and your balls-per-inning average is pretty damn low."

So... do you get (and welcome) lower-skilled players showing up for these?

I can't make it to anything in the current calendar year but maybe in 2013...

I haven't had a 20 in quite a while and I will be playing. There are others of similar ability who will play. You figure you might get to play World Champion Bobby Hunter, which I have several times in these tournaments. You might play Tom Karabotsos or Jeff Carter at some of these events. You might play some players who are not quite as good as you or some who are equal or a little above your speed.

And even if you get knocked out, there are usually good games to sweat with other straight pool players who are either waiting for their game or have been knocked out.

Good atmosphere.

Players of all skill levels are welcomed. I love playing in these non-handicapped tournaments even though I don't stand a chance of winning. It's double elimination so you're guaranteed at least two games, and it's fun for me to see if I can win one or two before being knocked out. A fun day at a great room.

Noel Mendoza cue

The Noel Mendoza cue will be awarded for the high run of a player who does not finish in the money. The field will pay out 25%. Of those that miss the cut, the high runner gets a very nice prize.

:grin-square:

Tom Karabotsos, George Michaels, Ike Runnels, Bob Cozzolino, Ed Latimer, Ron Shepard, Don Wardell, Lou Figueroa and a host of others beginning soon:grin-square:

Sounds like you have a nice showing there.

I hope to check out the stream later on today !!

Thanks
Steve

Any results?

When I left, Ike Runnels and Eric Hincks were playing each other on the winners side, as were Ron Shepard and George Michaels.

On the losers side, Tom Karabotsos was playing Ed Latimer, Rich Klein was playing Bob Cozzolino and there were others still alive, including Bob Treff, Rick Michalec, Sr., and a few others. I should find out today.

Hey D,

Is this a 2 day event ? i would like to watch some of the tourney today, while i still have power before "Sandy" gets here !!!
