Strange sound from the tip??

Hi all(from Turkiye).

I recently bought a dominiak sweet 16 from billiardwarehouse. Without loosing time I went to the club and started shooting. It's hit was really soft and solid and IMO deflection was low (not as low as predator or meucci but close..). Compared to my old McDermott the hit was even softer and stronger so I was glad with my purchase.

Because I didn't want to change or shape the tip frequently I wanted to install a medium moori and took the sweet 16 to a local cuemaker. After replacement I went to the club to try it and saw that the soft hit was gone. A strange sound like 'toing' was coming from the tip and the sound level was very high when hitting with extreme english. Also it seemed to me like that the shaft was vibrating more with the new tip.

Any suggestions on this problem? I hope it is not the shaft. I used moori with my old McDermott also but didn't have and problem like this with it.

I have faith in this dominiak and hope I can find a solution quickly before losing too much money :).

In simplicity, you like the cue but changed the tip. Then noticed the soft hit was gone. Possibly you need a softer tip? Possibly the pro-shop didn't get the tip glued correct. I've seen plenty where the glue wasn't spread across the whole tip and ferrule.

Take it back and have the tip changed.

I agree... two possibilities...

1. There's an air space under the tip or the tip is loose, or

2. he may have loosened the ferrule by being too agressive when facing it off. I had a cue that 'tinked' for months until I finally had the ferrule replaced after 3 different tips.

A slightly different approach but it happened to me... my cue started making a similar noise and it was driving me nuts, it turned out to be that the joint had loosened slightly. Not the side that you screw together but it actually loosened out of the butt slightly. Then again I have a lower quality cue, but its also worth a look. GL

Yup, either a poor glue job or a loose ferrule.

Troy...~~~ Has seen plenty of 'em...

I would test it first by taking the shaft in hand, holding the shaft very loosely, let the tip end fall on the table. Let it bounce on it's own. If it's a loose ferrule, you will hear rattling or vibration.

You will not usually hear a loose tip this way. A loose tip makes a "ping" or "tink" sound on impact with the cueball.

I stopped using Mooris because they were inconsistent from tip to tip. Some were way too hard and made the exact sound you describe.

I don't know what kind of ferrule you have, but I had a cue with an LBM ferrule (linen melamine) and I put a Moori on it. On english shots it actually made a screeching sound. I put three different Moori's on it and it did the same thing. I finally changed it to a LePro, and it was fine.

This is actually a terribly common reason for a "ping" sound. Before doing anything, simply remove the rubber bumper of your cue and tighten the screw. I find this to be the cause of most poor sounding hits.

Sometimes you get a funny sound with the hit when the weight bolt in the butt is loose.

Thanks for advices.

I will take the cue to the cuemaker today and see if he can fix it.
Hopefully if I fix this sound issue, I will post again to describe the solution.
