Stranger in a Minnesota Pool Hall

I recently had to attend a conference in Minneapolis, MN. I was able to get away one night to play pool. The Minnesota people on this forum mainly suggested two places--Shooters and Jimmy's Pro Billiards. I decided to try out Jimmy's Pro Billiards in Columbia Heights, MN.

The first thing that stood out to me was how friendly Jimmy was. The minute I walked in the door Jimmy stopped a game he was in and he started working to help my wife and me. There was only two tables going, but it was a Wednesday night, and Jimmy explained that "everyone had gone to Vegas." Jimmy spoke with us while he took our dinner order, and then he made the food himself! He was a very polite and kind owner.

I am a cheeseburger maniac. I eat burgers constantly. When I don't eat cheeseburgers, I eat steak, and then I go back to cheeseburgers. If there is one thing I know about, it is cheeseburgers. The burgers at Jimmy's Pro Billiards are FAR AND AWAY the best burger I have ever had in a Pool Hall. In my view, Jimmy's burgers rival some of the best burgers in my home town of St. Louis, MO. His burger is probably the best burger ever made at a pool hall...ever...by any person. The fries were also very good.

After the dinner, I played on an older diamond that I suspect may have been a table that sees a lot of the room's action. The pockets had been slightly tightened and the cloth was relatively new. The balls were clean. Jimmy's equipment was very good.

Music ran constantly while I played, something I enjoy immensely, as I think it helps to drown out conversation. When someone placed money in the jukebox, the music would kick up in volume and it would obviously be the song selected by the customer. I love this set-up. I wish every pool hall would do this with their jukebox.

Jimmy's Pro Billiards in Minnesota is a wonderful room. I would highly recommend this place to anyone headed to the Minneapolis area.

That's great to read. Jimmy is such a nice person. Each time I have ever met him, he was the ultimate gentleman, always dressed to the nines!

Is Jimmy's dog, Junior, still alive? If you want an interesting thread read, check this one out: Car Jacking Jimmy Wetch.

Jimmy ran the midwest just before I got into pool. I met him at the 1996 US Open & he was very friendly & professional. You never hear anything negative about the guy!

I'm glad to see he's doing well & he's committed to his business. He's doing it right!

I also really enjoy playing at Jimmy's. It has great ambiance. It just has that "vintage" pool room feel. Plenty of free parking and great food are definitely added benefits.

JAM, I think Junior is still alive and wagging. While I was there for a tournament a few months ago I noticed a small dog wandering around the building. I didn't pay much mind to it then but I'm pretty sure the dog I saw was a dachshund.

Sorry for the bad phone pic...

A dog that was just like that one was there.

To me, Jimmy really does seem like a super guy. So often in pool great players have a way of letting me down. It was the opposite with Jimmy Wetch. He was really a nice guy.

Good review, nice to see a positive thread once in awhile!

Ditto to this.

I have no plans on hitting Minnesota anytime soon, but I'm going to file this one in my memory banks, if the time does arise.

Great review!

(And I'm a cheeseburger man too, so this really piqued my interest)

Jimmy "the Kid" Wetch

kollegedave, you jogged the old fatmans memory with that trip to Jimmy's. Super Fella and a Heckuva Player. At one time the Twin Cities was like the Mecca of Pool. You had Shooters,C.R. Billiards, University,Al's,Biff's, and one of my favorites, Doc's Bohemian Cue.

Jimmy could hone his skills regularly in tournaments with guys like Gene Albrecht,Derek McMasters,Gene Lowe, and a local named Louie Lemke.

Pretty sporty up there.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Bet that cheeseburger was darn good!

Jimmy is a real good guy. He came through Houston in the 1990's and beat a bunch of guys playing 9 ball.

I love the way he plays. He's a gun slinger style of player for sure.

Then later I heard he got held up at gun point from some hood rats.

It's a shame if that is true..

could be a rumor

I live in Fargo, and the rumor is Jimmy got in a fist fight with his partner and they are closing. Dont take it as truth, but that is what the rumour is. I understand the Minneapolis pool scene is hurting. Too Bad, because there are a few guys working hard to change that. Jr, has had some good money matches recently.

If that's true hopefully one partner can buy the other one out. It would be a shame to lose this one.

I don't think pool is that bad up here. Sure it could be better but during the fall and winter there are options (leagues, small nightly tournaments, and MPA tournaments.) In the summer it's pretty dead though.

Junior has definitely had some good $ matches lately. It makes things interesting especially when it's cold and snowy.

John Stitch would be another of those guys working hard for pool. He runs MPA http://mpapool.com/MvcMPAPool/
One of the best things he has done is start a C division to allow lesser skilled players to compete and cash (a very smart move in my opinion). Most entries are in the C, B division especially at the larger casino tournaments.

If you build it, they will come.

I have not heard anything about Jimmy's place closing. I also don't believe the scene is hurting here. There are some fantastic players up here right now that definitely have the nuts to play big money pool.

I would also disagree that the Mpls / Minnesota pool scene is hurting. Compared to other areas, we have 5 pool halls (Shooters, CRs, Biffs, Jimmys, Two Stooges) in the Metro area, and several other venues that have pool tables that host traveling leagues.

As Rick mentioned, we also have the MPA running multiple tournaments from September to May for several skill levels. BCA, APA, M8 Leagues.

I would hardly consider this a "hurting" area compared to others.
