"Strawberry" Brooks

I met the man tonight and he was great. He showed me and my friend so many shots and explained certain one pocket concepts. Word has it that he was one of the best one pocket players in the world at one time. Is this true? How good was he? Does anyone have any stories they'd wish to share? I also met Bus Driver Ronnie tonight too. I drew him in the first round of a tournament. He was telling me how he doesn't play pool anymore and then proceeded to kick my butt. Good player.

He must have been a great player back in the day, because Grady, and the older road players speak of him very highly. I think i have a match vid with him commentating?....I'll have to check..

I have a video where he plays C'bread Red and BBQs him. does that say anything?

Thru the 70's, DC was a hotspot for 1h action and I have heard that both Strawberry and Ronnie were right up there...

Funny thing was that this woman is doing a documentary about him and she was videotaping the finals between Brandon Shuff and Bus Driver. I'm thinking, "wow, this bus driver must be good" and I start talking to Strawberry without knowing who he was. Strawberry says, "yeah, Ronnie plays real good." Little did I know I was talking to a legend until a half hour later when someone pointed it out to me. It was cool to watch Brandon play the aggressive style of one pocket with Strawberry next to me saying "that boy's crazy". After the match, Strawberry set up about 6 shots that Brandon made tactical errors on and showed him the "correct" way to play them. Brandon and I were in awe and trying to soak up as much information as we could. Strawberry says his eyes are failing now. It's a shame because his knowledge is incredible and you can tell that he still loves the game very much.

This was Ronnie's opening break. Brandon came up with an amazing shot here. I don't play a lot of one pocket, but I thought the shot was incredible. What would you have done here and I'll share the shot after a few replies.

Well, for a mapguy...You aren't telling us which pocket is Brandon's- I guess the lower one is...

The shot was kick 2 rails into the 15. I think that was all he wanted, but ended out like this (CB to A, 15 to B):

So you saw Cory's post? Yes, that's exactly how it went down. I was impressed.

Cory PM'd me and asked for a story about Melvin Strawberry Brooks. I have several, but in this one I win.
Stawberry came to Chicago about 10 or 12 years ago and we went down to Bob Agins poolroom on 63rd and Cottage Grove to play. It's an all black room but I was always as comfortable there as I was in my home room of Bensingers. (This is the room that was featured in Color of Money, where Tom Cruise does his stick twirling thing.) I had already won a few thou at the Billiard Cafe on Chicago's North Side and if I wanted to win more I was going to have to beat him where he had been playing. I was accompanied by the famed tush-hog Sugar Shack Johnny Novak. We were partners often, and had spent a lot of time together on the road. To cut this short, I was in dead stoke and I won another 10 thou. Strawberry went back to DC and returned about 6 months later. He came back to the Billiard Cafe and being the sport that he was, he wanted revenge. I had always experienced great shifts in my speed -- for example, once I broke Grady playing even, and another time he wound up giving me 11 to 7 and winning -- and this day was another recurrance of my speed shift. Trying to be cagey, I didnt really want to play, I asked Strawberry for a ball. Considering I came about 25 games ahead the last time we played, I figured he'd get hot and tell me where to shove it. Instead he seemed delighted to spot me. It was like some kind of a pride saver that somehow negated my previous win. Needless to say, he robbed me with the ball. However, 10k he did not win back. Out of stroke I was, dumb I was not. Good tough player and gambler.

Thank you sir. I hope some of the other one pocket greats will chime in on Strawberry and share a story or too. Just from talking to him and the other fellas that were there when I met him, I felt like his talents may have been underappreciated for many years. It would be nice if the next time I see him I can say, "I heard about that time that you and Grady played in Texas..." or something like that.
