Bob,

Please correct me if i'm wrong but arnt the average points/inning higher now than say 15-20 years ago, I dont remember many guys going over 2 and now I see 2.3 to 2.5. I'm not refering to Sang Lee having the best match of his carrier, but the total average for a tournment. I love 3C, I cant play a lick of it but I sure do appericate and enjoy it. I hope you have been good, looking foward to seeing you.

Best
eric

Yes, the level of play is up quite a bit. In the US Nationals, the best individual grand average back in the 1980s was often under 1.0. George Ashby was one of the first to consistently average over 1. In the latest US Nationals, the average of the whole finals field (10 players) was about 1.0.

In world play, the change has been even more remarkable. Ceulemans won many of his 3-C championships before 1980 with averages under 1.4. These days, top players expect to lose any match in which their average is that low. Recently, there have been two or three matches in which the loser averaged 3.0 or better.

Part of the higher level is equipment. Heated tables and lively cushions do make it easier to score. More important, I think, is that the players are learning and playing new shots and there is a lot more international competition for the top players.

Thank you Mr.Jewett thats what I remembered. The level of play in all cue sports is getting higher and higher-even snooker, there are alot of maximum 147's these days compaired to 20 years ago. Its great to see happen. Thanks again

Wow! I just watched Caudron get to 50 in 13 innings, approximately a 3.85 average. Along the way, he ran a 13. Truly brilliant.

Another reason for the rise in the standard is that unlike most pool players, 3c players are known for sharing their knowledge with each other openly. Everyone just gets better that way.

Mr. Jewett

One more question, I was looking at their averages and there are 2 numbers, one is General the other is Particular. It was on the results page on the far right side collum. Whats the difference????

Caudron is at 3.846 in the Particular collium, Wow thats beyond amazing unless they are playing on a 6' table with tennis balls. They have taken 3C to a level that I never thought would be so high.

Like most sports play is improving with equipment changes, knowlege, etc. When the 4 minute mile was broken years ago it was a huge accomplishment-however I dont see anyone running 2 minute miles these days. They are litterly scoring 2X/inning as they did 20 years ago, right?

thanks in advance for the answere to my question at the top in advance.

my very best,

eric

Amazing...

what these players accomplish, and with a shot clock too!

Mr Jewett, thanks for the heads up about this free stream.

Will these matches become available on DVD at some point?

2:45 Chicago time tomorrow, I'll be looking forward to the finals!

Kevin

I just wanted to call you Mr. Jewett :). Hi Bob, thanks for the link, and all you do for cue sports.

Kozoom offers some DVDs, but I don't know if they package the AGIPI tournaments. www.kozoom.com

Note that under "Video Magazine" on the tournament site there are interviews with the players as well as some excerpts of matches. Fortunately for most of us (US?), the interviews are in English.

As for the particular/general thing, particular average is for one game and general is what we would call "grand" average, which is for the whole tournament or for the finals but is over several matches.

Yes, the Caudron/Zanetti match was quite amazing (and quick). Marco averaged 2.154 and got whompped 50-28. Here are the line scores. Z broke.

Marco Zanetti ------ 4-3-7-1-5-0-4-3-0-0-0-1-0 = 28 in 13 = 2.154
Frédéric Caudron -- 11-3-3-0-0-5-5-0-6-0-13-1-3 = 50 in 13 = 3.846

Hello, Mr. Gross. Newcomers may not know that Mr. Gross was one of the few players to sometimes average 1.0 in US tournaments prior to the Sang Lee era. (I hope that doesn't kill your action. Much. :grin-square:)

You a funny man. I will never call you Mr. Jewett again :). But to clarify, I was actually a .800-.900 player when I was playing, but that was in another lifetime.

i'm a bout a .050 player on a good day, that means 1 out of 20 shots correct? I ran 2 without any coaching and 4 with coaching. I love 3C I havent played it in 20 years, I have probably 10 hours of playing time in it, But I'm going to change that soon, I really have awalys loved and respected the game. The older I get (43) the more I appericate it, I do see shots now better than I did when I was younger, Perhaps I'm just a slow learner(I'm not jokeing) things do come to me more easy the older I get. I see the correct shot english, what rails etc now often when I was 22 I didnt hardly ever see the right shot. funny how that works.

thanks again

Eric P :)
