A few tips for when walking alone late at night...

-Don't wear any jewelry, not even a cheap watch.

-Dress down. Look like a bum if possible including worn looking shoes. Blend in.

-If someone approaches you, ask them if they have a spare quarter. (By doing this, you are informing them that you don't have any money.) If they ask first, say you were going to ask the same thing.

-If you have a long walk, find a grocery store shopping cart. Push the shopping cart and talk to yourself. You will look like a crazy bum - no one will bother you.

While you're at it, perhaps a good dose of body odor, maybe something smelling like vomit mixed with bourbon and stains on your pants should help keep the more unsavory elements of the population at arm's length.

What kind of world do we live in where people need to look and act like the dredges of society just to survive?

my tip......

pistol in your pocket and your hand near it. In fact im going to see if i cant get my custom case made with a special pocket just to hold a pistol, something that makes it semi-concealed but easy to get to.

Don't forget - crap yourself before heading out. :/

a few more tips

A few more serious tips:

Be alert and aware of what is going on around you, predators are looking for someone that is offguard. Walk with purpose, not fast enough to look panicked but fast enough to indicate that you have a destination in mind and mean to get there.

I never had a problem on the mean streets, probably because I looked more like a mugger than a muggee when I haunted the rougher areas!

Just curious. Of those here who have concealed carry rights, how many also keep a knife as a back up?

I know, I know...the old "don't bring a knife to a gunfight" thing..but it is my belief, that within short distances, a knife is quicker. At distances greater than 2-3 feet, I'd prefer the gun. It's just a matter of situational and tactical awareness as to which to use.

I have dozens of different uses for my knife from cutting tips off, to food preparation and the occasional rope and packing strips.

This is my knife. It is an "assisted opening" SOG tactical folder:

If there's a big crowd on one side of the street, walk on the other side.

21' rule

It is much worse than you think. If you start going for your pistol when an attacker with a knife is already within twenty-one feet the attacker with the knife can get in the first and very possibly only strike. The police have proven that to the legislative body in my state and that is why "the twenty-one foot rule" applies for both police and civilians. If you are threatened by someone with any weapon and they are within twenty-one feet, start shooting asap, otherwise the advantage is all theirs.

I can't remember if I have a CCW permit or carry a knife or not so I will duck that question. ;)

I have a concealed weapon permit and often carry a gun but not all the time. The most important thing is the right gun with the right load and a lot of practice with the gun you carry. I like an old Charter Arms 44 Bulldog, the Son of Sam gun. This gun was also once the choice of air marshals. I shoot at least once a month at the range as does my wife. She actually has a bigger gun then mine a Colt Diamond back. We have other guns but like these. I would never carry a knife for protection, I know plenty of guys who can easily take a knife away from you, a gun is the thing and the willingness to use it. You don't want to be carrying a 32 or a 25, you can hit someone with one of those and have them not even know they were hit. Having said all that, guns are not for everyone.

Sounds like the guy that attacked Danny got him from behind. These guys worked as a pair, one distracted him by asking him for money and the other guy came up behind. This is a very hard ploy to defend against.

My tactics when on the street is to never walk close to the buildings, I'm out closer to the curb. When someone asks me for money, I tell them no in a very strong assertive tone. I always keep my eyes open for anyone I've passed by to see if they turn around and come towards me. Keeping a distance is an excellent idea. If they take a step towards you, take a step back. You want to keep at least 6 feet between you and the assailant. Or, if they have already gotten past that 6' distance, close the distance and get tight up against them. They can't swing a hammer very good if you are tight to them. Of course, if they have a knife, you're in deep shit.

I used to teach martial arts and specialized in weapons defense. Sometimes you have to risk getting a hand or forearm cut a little to disarm the assailant. By far the best defense is keeping a distance between you and them and try to get out into the middle of the street and create a commotion. Thieves do not like to draw attention to themselves and being out in the middle of traffic might keep them from coming after you. Let's just hope you don't get run over!

I'm 17 but...

I know the head of the Toronto E.T.F (swat team) Tom Sharky and another guy that was in C.E.S.I.S (canadian F.B.I/C.I.A if i spelled it right)that took me under their wing. All I carry is a small pocket knife and sometimes an extendable baton, and can disarm or severely injure,or even kill an attacker up to 250lbs (I'm 120lbs) with my bare hands or a weapon.

Let's not forget about good old mace/pepper spray and pocket tasers. Pocket tasers are much more effective than any knife. If you zap them even for a split second they are on the ground writhing in pain.

Not sitting in your car. No way do I want to be that close if I can help it. I knife also just represents a threat. Once produced you better be ready to use it because the guy is going to be pissed. A gun ends it right there.
