Strickland in CH-Pratteln? What happened??

Hi, has anybody detailed information about what exactly happened when he lost there?

He must have behaved awfully to everybody and cancelled his Trickshot-Show without saying a word.

Anybody??

Every time I see Earl Strickland's name in the title of a thread, I'm thinking, "OMG, here we go again."

Point of clarity, what is "CH-Pratteln"? I may have missed the news on Earl being there, wherever it is.

For you to say "Earl must have behaved awfully," it's kind of like stereotyping IMO, unless, of course, you were there and wanted to share the story about this event and decided to initiate this thread about Earl's exhibition at wherever "CH-Pratteln" is.

LOL. Yeah, I'm sitting here waiting for the lightning round!

Sorry. It's the city of Pratteln in Suisse (CH), were one of the biggest European Tournaments was held with a 192 field of top players, which Mika Immonen won. Earl didn't make it through the first round and .... I'd like to know what really happened "then".

VAP,
I hope you set your sights higher than that. Why not try to get good like Efren, Nick V., Johnny A., Jim Rempe, Tony Robles, Jose Garcia??? I don't hear a lot of bashing of these players who generally behave in a gentlemanly fashion.

I do not think good players get bashed inevitably just because they are good (though I admit it definitely happens sometimes) - I think that more often than not they behave badly and the fans are quick to jump on it. If players behaved better, then we would not always have to hear apologists begging for the benefit of the doubt. It is possible that some people behave badly enough to not deserve the benefit of the doubt (though I am not the one to decide who). It is the right of the players to behave any way they want; it is the right of the internet community to comment on their behavior any way they want (even if they are total moronic losers like me) - hey, even morons need an outlet for their deep-rooted feelings of inadequacy.

When did it occur, Vito? On what dates? That is a very big field, over 190 players!

.

i was just making an ill fated attempt at humor. some players get bashed because of things they do, and some just get bashed because someone isn't as good as them.

on a serious note though, i do have my sights set much higher. i admire all those on your list. tony is my coach/teacher, as i see him once a month. i also like to call him my friend and my role model. to one day even have my name mentioned in the same sentence with any of the guys you mentioned would be great.

Pratteln, Suisse

Some Names: Bustamante, Strickland, Ortmann, Souquet, Immonen, Jungo, Földes, Chamat, Storm, Tot, Feijen, Petroni, Hybler, Vettas....

Strickland lost his 3. Game to Florian Hammer 5:9 (GER) and in the loser round his next game to unknown Mennillo Guglielmo 4:9.

Interesting analogy, Willie, players versus Internet community.

I find it kind of sad when great events occur and when a thread is initiated about them, the majority of the posts are not about how wonderful the level of play was, the atmosphere of the venue site, or an individual's superior performance.

Pool players are mere mortals. They don't enjoy the status of celebrity in the United States because pool is at the bottom of the barrel in the scheme of things relating to sports recognition. Earl Strickland may not be someone's cup of tea, but it cannot be denied that he is currently the American player who holds the most belts. And for that, I think he deserves a little damn respect.

So what if he starts talking to himself, screeches like a baboon, or sits there as quiet as a church mouse! He's one of the biggest draws in any event he plays in and will continue to be.

JAM,

I understand your point. I have to ask when is enough enough? In some cases being bashed by your fellow addicts tends to modify your attitude. Some thought Earl's antics here in Rochester two years ago was acceptable. At the conclusion of his match with Keith, his comment about how great Keith played did not make up for his continuing babble. I know Keith jabbed back at him during the match. Perhaps I missed the point of the whole thing. I tend to make too much of things from time to time.

As you pointed out, Earl is THE DRAW in any event he plays in. I only wish people watched him to see his incredible talent on exhibition instead of waiting for him to go "off".

Here's another link relating to this European tournament, February 3-6, in Switzerland. I can't read this one either, as this one is from Holland. I was hoping to see some pictures. :p

Earl's Behavior

It has been my observation both from personal experience and from reading about his conduct, that Earl has worked/works very hard to earn ALL the recognition he receives. He has incredible talent, no discipline, and is overdue for induction into the HOF.

I copied the summary from the final - written in German - into Babelfish, and got an automatic translation to English. These translations can be pretty weird and actually quite hilarious reading, ( "Ralf of the Souquet") but I think you get the picture:

"In the final game anniversary tournament 2005 mika Immonen from Finland and Ralf of the Souquet from Germany faced each other, which referred Vilmos Foeldes from Hungary and Francisco Bustamante from the Philippines in the preceding portion to rank 3. Ralf Souquet won the traditional BREAK from play and opened also immediately the anniversary tournament final 2005. With the first BREAK of Ralf Souquet did not fall a ball and none counted with the fact that the consequences would be so devastating. Mika Immonen took over the table, shot the portion begun out and went with 1:0 into guidance. Mika Immonen seemed to suddenly switch then a few courses highly. It vacated the next three sets and developed its guidance to the 4:0. The next impact of mika Immonen gave a heavy entrance ball to it. After long superior it decided for the offensive strategy and concerned themselves the ball. For the regret of the spectators it slipped and committed a foul. Ralf Souquet's first chance to prove itself in the final. This succeeded to it bravuroes and could shorten thereby on 1:4. But already as with the opening BREAK of the Finals Ralf Souquet could sink no ball, but left an open table with entrance ball. Mika used this chance merciless and increased to 5:1. That was not successful enough, again breakte mika and set still one drauf. Thus it stood after only few minutes 6:1 for mika Immonen. It played up to this time with such a indescribable security and superiority that it could be only a question of the time, until it would have decided the final to its favour. In the next opening impact of mika no ball fell, left Ralf Souquet in addition, no optimal situation. Ralf gave itself however no Bloesse and shot the portion out. Thus it stood for 2:6. The following two portions went likewise at mika Immonen. Ralf Souquet seemed to have no luck at this time simply, which concerned BREAK. Either no ball or it fell was missing a playable entrance ball. Mika Immonen continued to pull steadfastly on its winner route, breakte and increased to 9:2. Then for the first time the white ball fell in the BREAK of mika. Ralf Souquet sank the first few balls and touchierte with the position play 2 lying exposed balls, which blocked themselves then mutually the way. Ralf solved this situation however masterfully and sank the nine with the help of nearby filters. 9:3 the intermediate conditions... Ralf abandoned BREAK again. Two balls fell, but were appropriate it for safe on the next ball the 2. Ralf Souquet risked a heavy impact over the short strut and sank the 2 which is near because of averaging ash, inclusive position play on 3. The remaining balls were only formality (9:4). A renewed BREAK, which Ralf does not offer the possibility of out-supplying the play directly. It plays a "Push Out", which mika converts into a safe and to a "error" forces Ralf, i.e. no safe file. Mika shoots the portion out to the 10:4. The latter and crucial BREAK of mika. It sinks a ball in the impact, but does not prevent directly concealable 2 it to out-supply the portion. A failed Safestoss brings Ralf Souquet again a chance, but despite that safe lies the 2 missra tenen very heavily. Ralf on safe to tried likewise play, fails it however exactly the same and leaves to mika a playable entrance ball. Mika uses it required chance, sinks the ball and adjusts themselves on the next ball. It turns on the heavy ball, sinks it and erspielt themselves perfect a position for the remaining 5 balls, which it sank already almost in the high-speed run. Briefly after 20:00 o'clock the winner anniversary tournament of the 2005 was thus certain. Mika Immonen from Finland defeats Ralf Souquet from Germany with 11:4. Cordial congratulation!"

I found the complete results in the forum at this page:
http://www.poolbe.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=4659#4659

You can actually use Babelfish - http://www.babelfish.org/ to translate a whole webpage from e.g. dutch to english. Try it with www.poolbe.com. The problem is that some names are translated too. But again, entertaining reading. :D
