Strickland Match

You should have seen what they wrote about Alex Higgins when he was alive, yet he is heralded today as one of the very best who ever picked up a snooker cue. His fans adored him. Earl has fans, even with all his warts and faults; they're just not blue-blooded pool purists. Alex Higgins drank booze, smoked, did drugs, but he was still a super star.

I disagree that he is having a negative impact on pool today. People clamor around him wherever he goes. He is, in fact, a super star. One only needs to say "Earl," one word, and everybody knows who we're talking about.

Great post Jen......he is an icon, hate him or love him....but I can't believe folks can hate him for barking....really, he barks, and that sets folks off who never have to play against him.....when did pool become some sophisticated sport that needs to played by gentlemen only ??

I like SVB just as much as I like Earl.....heck, unless someone is breaking the law, I'm gonna root for them...... But folks throwing hissing fits every time earl is mentioned gets old.....heck, if he was so bad why don't they throw him out?? Cause earl puts fannies in the seats.....those that like him and those that don't....he's the Howard Stern of pool......folks that hate Howard listen longer than the folks that actually like him ??? Crazy, huh ??

As Earl is talking and walking around the table, commentator Mark Wilson states this is why Earl is not a part of Team USA any longer on the Mosconi Cup. Also states it would be better for Team USA if Earl played for Europe.

Not nice comments by Mark.

well done mark Wilson, to many people are up earls arse in the fact is that he is a bad sportsman and has been/is a disgrace to the game hence why he is no longer invited to many tournaments and mosconi

Mark Wilson has been very clear that he wants to improve the sportsmanship and professionalism of the Americans. It's at the core of his approach as the captain/coach, it's not some minor issue to him. He believes it will help their game, and I'm sure he's absolutely correct about that. There's no reason for him to be shy about what he has previously publicly stated.

I understand your reasoning on this. With that said, he can say whatever he believes in. We do have the First Amendment rights here in the States, but to do so on a broadcast taped recording that will be sold and disseminated forever more by Accu-Stats, it was wrong for him to bash Earl like that in reference to the Mosconi Cup. Wrong.

Yeah he could have done it without directly naming/attacking Earl, or with more subtlety.

One only needs to say "Earl," one word, and everybody knows who we're talking about.

One only needs to mention Hitler, Bin Laden and Stalin and everybody knows who we're talking about as well. There are numerous reasons people achieve name recognition and not all of those reasons are good.

I admire Earl's accomplishments and capabilities. I enjoy watching him play. However, his disrespect to other players and unsportsmanlike conduct is most often way over the top. Here's the bottom line. Earl isn't the player he once was and he can't dominate as he once did. He can't accept that and is a sore loser. It's too bad, I suspect his legacy will end up having him known more for his poor behavior than for his great playing.

I think he will be more known for his tremendous fire power- shot making, spinning the ball- than his tantrums or poor sportsmanship. I wish he would keep it together more because he still has tremendous talent. He is a genius at the table who plays position in ways I could never foresee- that's why I enjoy watching him play- not because of his antics.

Mark Wilson tells the truth, why Earl will not embarrass the USA this year.
His ability and accomplishments were not questioned.
And yes it is fair to compare Alex Higgins to Earl, ...Alex was my hero,...till i played him.

This thread is 5 pages long on Earl Strickland and he isn't in the tournament anymore. I don't see anyone else being talked about that got knocked out :-). I guess you could say he's pretty popular with the haters and the fans...

Go on...

I dont think its a great comparison. Much like jam and barton, higgins and strickland could start fights in empty rooms, but they have too many character differences to mention.

In short, earl can often come across as an asshole and a sore loser. That is not a great combination, and will endear you to few.

More generally, its always a good idea to stay away from your heroes. They can only disappoint you.

I'm not going to let you ruin my day today with the U.S. Open finals.

I have written to the moderators and asked them to intervene by reporting your post this morning. I have read previously where you have attacked John Barton numerous times, and now you have added me to your list to target. You have targeted me several times in the past few days, as well as in the past.

The moderators state if one has a problem, they should report the post. I have done this, this morning. I hope you cease and decist writing about me. You certainly are entitled to your opinions, and there is nothing wrong with that, but you can do so without singling other members out and writing untoward remarks about them.

I won't let you ruin my day today. I came here to enjoy the U.S. Open. This is a pool forum.
