I haven't heard much about this before. I'm trying to smooth out my back stroke to forward stroke. Most pros have a smooth, almost slow back stroke and transition. Many average players just jerk it back and forth. I had never considered this until recently and have been trying to figure out the best way to incorporate this in my game.
I can pause a little bit at the back, or just focus on being smooth. I play better when I'm doing this; however I haven't gotten to where it is natural, and obviously you can't be thinking about your stroke if you expect to play well. So it is a theory to practice question. Thanks

do what you just said in pratice..........smooth back stroke pause at end of back stroke and deliver the shot and finish the stroke. You need at least 6 months of this to be able to really see any kind of "permanent" or natural results

Remember 6 months of playing and 6 months of practice are NOT one and the same.

The length of the pause is arbitrary. There will always be a pause in the transition from backstroke to delivery. The length of the pause is what ever you feel comfortable with.

I think with the right disciplined practice, the OP can 'redevelop' their stroke within a few weeks, rather than 6 months. Focus on the smooth transition from the end of the backswing to the finish of the forward stroke...and especially focus on keeping a relaxed bicep and relaxed grip. Using a pendulum stroke is the easiest way to achieve this.
