Strongest APA regions

Just curiuos, what areas are respected as being top APA areas?

There aren't necessarily any geographically strong areas, but rather individual divisions in the areas that are strong. For example, in Massachusetts, there are areas in Boston that are strong, but other areas in Boston that are pretty weak. My home base is relatively strong, while 20miles south is horrendously weak. It all depends on the core group of players that make up that division.

I can only imagine that the division that Chicago's Mike Bandy plays in must be pretty damned strong.

Seems like every year I hear of the teams from Michigan being very strong.

But it's so damn cold up there, all they have to do in Winter is have sex and play pool....Hey wait. I think I wanna move to Michigan :)

Fred,

Your area is VERY strong considering how well teams place from there consistently in Vegas. The other strong area in MA is the Taunton / New Bedford area. Quincy, where I play, is middle of the road at best.

when i was going to vegas for the APA, canada always had good teams.

They play league on 9ft tables so when they go to vegas its a bit easier and their handicap is not always 100% accurate.

Sounds like our APA area. Every place around here is 9' tables. We had a guy that was a 6 come visit some friends and he was used to bar boxes and on a 9' he rivaled our 3. Was rather amusing to see the difference of someone going from a tiny table to a big that wasnt used to it.

Midwest is the best period. Look at the stats for APA and ACS over the last 7 yearsdominated by play from the Quadcity area as well as Chi and OHIO . Michigan is always strong

Fred, Mike Bandy hasn't been able to play APA in quite a few years due to being declared a pro in the late 90s. He really was a true monster though. You might have noticed his protoge' Jeff Sergeant, also from Joliet, plays that bar table 8 ball pretty sporty too. Chicago area in general is a top APA region.

So would guys like

Brian Gregg
Louis Demarco
Truman Hogue
Tony Coleman

be considered pros?

Very good question, Max. You would have to ask the APA about that one. That question has been posed to them MANY times.

strong team?

How could they? You can't play 3 SL7s in the same match, meaning they could only field two players if this were the whole team, and they could never win a match. Or were they sandbagging horrendously?

they have had some open division tournaments out there and were alowed to use apa members from different teams as long as they had enough scores for the year to keep thier card.

i haven't played apa in quite a while but i believe they played 3 man matches with 5 man teams.

most of these guys are no longer alowed to play at all anymore as far as i know.

Brian was one of our sevens when we won the city cup in Indy ...
in Vegas , I was raised up to a seven after my first match .....if that hadn't happened , I believe we would have won it all.....

The key phrase is Chicago area, not in the city so much. Not sure exactly why. Lots of theories. Could be that the LO here runs a tighter ship than the ones in the burbs as he's only had the franchise for five years. Maybe that 7' barbox's, and APA league pool in general, aren't taken quite as seriously in the city by the better players as they are in other places. Who knows.

Well I'm about to sign up for the APA's next season which I think starts in a few weeks. I haven't been in the APA before (or any league), so it should be an interesting experience.
