Here is something similar to Bob Jewett's mirror system that works well for me -- usually.
I use the cue stick as a pointer over the object ball. I center the stick on the object ball and place the cue tip over the rail. This allows me to see the angle between the cue stick and the rail the object ball is rolling to when it is struck.
Next I flip that angle (in my head) to see the mirror image for the return of the cue ball off the rail to the pocket. By adjusting the cue stick I can find the place where the mirror image appears to go into the pocket.
This works well for me and I have learned to add or subtract English after mastering the basic technique.
I am not sure but I think I learned the basic system from Jewett and later found that I could do without the far distance point as he teaches. I could begin to see the mirror reflection at the rail and this made it easier for me. So --- his way is probably the best way to start and I later modified it to make it easier for me and my limited abilities.
