Struggling With The Ghost

I started with four balls, race to 11. Then five balls. Then six. Then seven. Took me longer to get past the seven than the rest. However, i am up to 8 balls now and really struggling to beat the ghost - or even give him a good match. Going to keep trying though..

Take each shot as though it is the money ball. This will improve focus.

Been there........done that........it works

Thats a good idea John. I'll have to remember it.

I played the Ghost again last night, using 8 balls. I lost 11-5 i believe. Seems like the break isnt giving me good spreads and balls are tucked behind other balls alot, or i have to go up and down table. I am going to keep trying though.

I would be playing this racking 9 ball and stopping on the 8 or just dropping the 9 after break. Weird racks for weird amounts of balls probably aren't helping your break any

Funny that you should say that. It's true, of course, but it's kind of funny because when we practice we have to remind ourselves to be more intense and when we compete we have to remind ourselves to relax. Ha!

Just lost 11-10. I was down 10-8 and got out a couple of racks but missed a makeable slight cut on the 6-ball with four balls left on the table on the last rack. It rattled and wouldnt fall.

The problem is the balls arent cooperating. Seems like 4-5 racks balls would hide behind another ball and make position play a little tougher.

But, i am getting closer.....

Played the Ghost with 8 balls three times over the weekend. Lost 11-3, just wasnt in to it mentally, was focusing on the high school basketball tournament.

Then i lost 11-9 and 11-8.

Havent won using 8 balls yet, but i keep knocking on the door.

Mike,

Great job, although it appears you have won 1 out of 6 matches. May want to stick with the 8-ball ghost until it is easy. As you have already experienced, adding each ball makes it much more difficult.

Good Luck!

Steve

I lost 11-5 to the 9-Ball Ghost tonight. I lost last night something like 11-3 but mentally i was completely out of it, thinking about other stuff.

Anyway, i have noticed three things that are causing me issues at the moment:
1) balls arent cooperating, difficult layouts
2) controlling the amount of draw
3) missing shots i should make

Honestly, #1 has perhaps been the worst of the three lately. It plagued me during the Ghost with eight balls too.

Beating the BIH ghost has almost as much to do with your break as it does with your skill set... Find the speed where the balls don't tie up and don't worry about making a ball...If you do make one it's a bonus... if not you still have ball in hand and nothing tied up.....

I'd also suggest using the either the 9 or 10ball rack until you pass it then I'd use the full 15... Just take the highest numbered balls off after the break... That's been mentioned so I hope you have already incorporated getting rid of the funky racks for the odd ghosts...

Keep playing the ghost.

The real test of your ability will come when you take your game to the field.

You will probably be surprised at how well you play.

I agree with this, when I'm not breaking good I have a tough time beating the ghost on any race to 9 or 11. You really need to focus on everything, make sure you give yourself a nice tight rack, focus on your break, break speed, try to play a ball on a pocket and control the cue ball, just because you get BIH after the break doesn't mean you can slack off on your break. When I do all that is when I'm confident I'll beat the ghost.

Better to rack all nine, then take the lower ball off the table. You want to get used to shooting that 9 ball. It shouldn't make a difference, but it does in a lot of peoples minds.

When your playing the your playing against the break two against one sort to say if your not crushing the rack it can be really hard. Well this is what happens to me anyways, but ya I like the pain so I don't take down balls before shooting and normally lose 10-1 10-0 but I like what I'm doing to try to get out the rack.

All in all the losses are positive for me Because I'm really starting to understand what and why it went wrong instead of saying that's bullshit and this table sucks.

I had a more entertaining match against that scoundrel the Ghost tonight. He beat me, but it was at least a decent match. I lost 11-8 and he benefited from a couple of difficult layouts.

Getting closer....:cool::cool:

Hey Mike,

Try this. Put a piece of chalk where you want the cue ball to stop after you have made a ball. This is a visual exercise on QB control that may help.

Hang in there man. :smile
